Explore Indian/Black Relations http://www.ur.ku.edu/News/03N/AugNews/Aug22/hall.html LAWRENCE -- A new study by researchers at the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University will examine historical interactions between two minority communities in the United States. The Ford Foundation has awarded $300,000 jointly to KU's Hall Center for the Humanities and Haskell. The two-year grant is the product of efforts of KU and Haskell faculty and administrators, and of groups and organizations in the Kansas-Oklahoma region. Scholars from many fields will collaborate on "The Shifting Borders of Race and Identity: A Research and Teaching Project on the Native American and African-American Experience." The overall goal of the project is to enhance the understanding of the historical relationship between two historically significant minority communities in the United States.

Heriberto Heriberto Galarza, Past President NYS Association for Bilingual Education galarza@buffnet.net NAU has gotten a grant funded that provides Hispanics and Indians an opportunity to get a Ph.D. in special education all expenses paid. It will be given via distance education, but students must spend 8-10 weeks in Flagstaff every summer. See the attached. FYI, and can you send it to those who might be interested? Rosie --------------- Faculty for Inclusive Rural/Multicultural Special-educator Training (FIRST) Program Overview: The U.S. Department of Education has awarded Northern Arizona University (NAU) College of Education a grant to prepare Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Special Education Doctoral Students. The FIRST grant will fund Hispanic or Native American individuals, including individuals with disabilities. This program will provide 12 students the opportunity to earn a doctorate in education (Ed. D.) in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Special Education beginning in Spring 2004 and ending by December 2007. This innovative program will allow these individuals to keep their positions in local school districts during the school year, while taking courses through distance education and through intensive doctoral studies in Flagstaff during the summers. Public schools currently face serious shortages of special education teachers, particularly in rural and inner city schools. The FIRST grant is intended to assist schools in meeting the need for special educators by preparing additional culturally diverse special education higher education faculty to assist in teacher preparation. FIRST program graduates will be prepared and expected to take positions in departments of special education at colleges or universities. The grant will provide funding to the 12 doctoral students for tuition, books, travel to Flagstaff in the summer, family campus housing in the summer, and a small summer living expense stipend. In addition, the grant provides support to the 12 FIRST doctoral students through faculty research mentors, doctoral student mentors, travel to national conferences, and enrichment seminars with nationally known researchers in bilingual special education. If interested in submitting an article please contact him at d_castillo@nabe.org Guidelines for the articles. First, all the articles should be written as a Word document, and they can be emailed to David. Second, the articles should not be more than 2000 words (about 5 pages typewritten, double spaced). THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT GUIDELINE THAT AUTHORS STICK TO. Third, the dealine is one month from yesterday, Oct. 15th. Pictures are always nice for articles and they would have to be sent as .jpeg. The theme for this issue is "Indigenous Languages." Some article topics they are interested in include: the preservation of Indigenous languages, teacher testimonials, any new research on the issue, indian education since passage and enactment of NCLB. These are a few ideas. Whatever pertains to bilingual education and indigenous languages is acceptable. Title: NCES Releases Postsecondary Education Transcript Study
Body: From: Using postsecondary transcript data collected as part of NCES' National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88), this tabular summary presents data on postsecondary attainment, attendance, curriculum, and performance of the NELS:88 sample members who attended postsecondary institutions. Postsecondary attainment is broken down by race/ethnicity, sex, and socioeconomic status for different categories of student attendance (based on number of credits and institutional type). Postsecondary attendance is examined through the number of institutions students attended and in the number of states they attended them, types of institutions attended, such as community colleges, and credits taken during the summer term. College course-taking patterns are broken down by high school course taking and by college major. Finally, postsecondary performance is examined through undergraduate GPA, remedial courses, and number of postsecondary credits.
