The pilot starting date has been changed to November 3rd, 2003. Teachers can pick any day between Nov. 3 and Jan. 31. ************************************************************* Dear Japanese teachers, Many of us want to measure our students' proficiency. But existing tests are so expensive and time-consuming that few of us can do it. Now, the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) is developing an integrated online assessment of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In addition to helping the field develop a better way to measure student performance, having your students participate in the pilot will help them understand what they have to do to be proficient in Japanese. We are looking for teachers willing to pilot this online assessment this fall/winter. This assessment, called STAMP 2, measures Interpretive (reading and listening) and well as Presentational (speaking and writing) proficiency. The first pilot will focus on the Interpretive Mode. STAMP 2 is innovative both pedagogically and technically. Real-life tasks assess interpretive and presentational modes in the national standards. The interpretive section (listening and reading) is computer adaptive and its results become available immediately after test. Presentational mode (speaking and writing) sections are graded by human graders. The test uses streaming video and technology to record and deliver sound files over the Internet. To take the test, students just need a recent browser and Quicktime, both of which can be downloaded for free. In this pilot, we would like to get data on listening, reading, and speaking items from Novice-Mid to Intermedite-High. If you are interested, please email jppilot@darkwing.uoregon.edu.
