Title: A Place by Any Other Name...
Body: Prompted by the recent confusion over whether to refer to the 2006 Winter Olympics location by its English name, Turin, or its Italian name, Torino, About.com's German language guide has created a chart to help clarify similar problems for learners of German. The gazetteer displays the names of famous cities and other places in English, German, and the local language, and includes links to related online resources. http://german.about.com/library/blgazeteer01.htm

Title: World Languages Week Ideas
Body: Does your school designate a particular week to celebrate linguistic diversity? Here are a few ideas from a letter to students about their school's celebration. These may be helpful for teachers and administrators hoping to increase interest and enrollment in foreign language classes. ---- The week will be full of fun activities and contests for all students in Spanish, German and French classes. You will win points for your participation in these activities. Prizes will be awarded to the three students who have the most points at the end of the week. The day and date will be announced in the morning over the loudspeaker in many different languages. A trivia question for Spanish students, one for German students, and one for French students will be read (in English) over the loudspeaker each morning. Answers can be dropped off in a box in your classroom. The first correct answer drawn at the end of the day will earn 5 points towards the contest. Music from Spanish-speaking countries will be played in the cafeteria on Monday; from German-speaking countries on Tuesday; from French-speaking countries on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday you will hear music from other cultures. How to win contest points: - Answering trivia questions and having your correct answer drawn - Winning your division of the poster contest - Wearing your sticker - Bringing in a relevant news article and reporting on it - Making a dish from an authentic recipe for the banquet - Attending the banquet - Winning games played in the classroom - Guessing how many M&M's are in the jar in the cafeteria Activities that count towards your class grade: - Making a poster or diorama on the assigned topic - Making a sticker with an approved slogan or saying - Reporting on a news article you bring in - Making a dish from an authentic recipe for the banquet Zubryckyj, M. Title: PowerPoints for German Vocabulary Practice
Body: Recently a high school German teacher announced on the AATG listserv (American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu) that PowerPoint files with vocabulary and images from the Komm Mit texts (levels 1 and 2) were available for download from her Web site. Whether you use these texts or not, these files may be useful for teachers of beginning German, as they are thorough and may easily be modified for your own purposes. http://gbs.glenbrook.k12.il.us/Academics/ForeignLanguage/German%20vocab%20ppts.htm

Title: Recommended Text for French Grammar-Focused Practice
Body: Tired of coming up with example sentences, a French teacher recently complained to the FLTEACH listserv that textbooks include too few exercises, and that she was in need of a good resource for grammar practice. Here is one suggestion she received. ---- Although it does include some stories, translation exercises and even verb charts, grammar-drilling is the real focus of NTC/McGraw-Hill's ‘Reprise: A Complete Review for Grammar, Communication, & Culture’ (ISBN 0844214639). It has very repetitive grammar-focused activities with sentences and questions the student reacts to with complete sentences. For example, in the chapter treating the pluperfect, future perfect, past conditional and conditional sentences, there are at least 14 substitution drill, questions to answer with a given subject, and sentence builder activities with about 8 sentences to work on in each activity, each one focusing on a particular phrasal construction in French. Some activities are just for quand, some just for si, some with an understood if clause, etc. There is also an answer key available, although both may be either out of print or in a new edition. If you want lots of practice, this is your book. It's not very communicative, but for what it is, it's pretty good. Detiveaux, G. Re: Help me with sentences. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (15 Feb. 2006).

Title: House and Home
Body: Here are some suggestions recently posted to various listservs for teaching a unit on housing. Although most of these came from teachers of English to young learners, they may give you some new ideas for your foreign language class as well. Arlington Public School: ESL Curriculum for Adults, Housing http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/instruct/ctae/adult_ed/REEP/ reepcurriculum/housing200&250.html http://www.arlington.k12.va.us/instruct/ctae/adult_ed/REEP/ reepcurriculum/housing100&150.html Marcopolo search results: house and home http://www.marcopolosearch.org/MPSearch/Search_Results.asp?orgn_id=2&log_type=1&hdnFilter=&hdnPerPage=15&txtSearchFor=house+and+home&selUsing=all Demeures de France: Outstanding Real Estate in France http://www.demeures.com/titre_en.htm ---- The Oxford Picture Dictionary has a nice section on homes, rooms, chores, furniture, etc. After these words were covered in class, I had them design a floor plan of their dream house on large paper and label rooms. Later, the sales inserts/flyers from the Sunday paper were used by them to "furnish" the house. They cut and glued the pictures, later labelling them. Then, they wrote paragraphs about their dream homes. As they worked ( took several days ) I would walk around and make them talk about these homes. I typed expectations and point values for them to understand exactly what I wanted. It went well and they enjoyed it. Sams, D. Re: house and home unit.
