Title: Chinese Programs Seek Tech Solutions
Body: Many educators were surprised when a recent poll demonstrated a huge demand for Chinese K-12 programs. Mandarin classes are popping up all around the country, many of them aided by federal funding, but a lack of qualified teachers is prompting some to consider technological solutions such as distance education. Title: Funding Opportunity: Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program
Body: From http://www.iie.org/Template.cfm?Section=Home&Template=/Activity/ActivityDisplay.cfm&activityid=70 Since 1968, the FLTA Program has aimed to strengthen foreign language instruction at U.S. educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence. The FLTA Program provides an opportunity for young, international teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the cultures and customs of the United States while engaging in non-degree studies. FLTAs add an energetic and up-to-date cultural component to foreign language classes as well as to student life on U.S. campuses. This interaction makes studying and learning languages much more meaningful and real. Working with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, IIE has expanded the FLTA Program to include teaching assistants in Arabic, Bengali, Bahasa Indonesian, Chinese, Hausa, Hindi, Malaysian, Mongolian, Pashtu, Persian, Russian, Swahili, Tagalog, Tajik, Turkish, Urdu and Uzbek. If you are a native speaker of one of these languages please contact the responsible office in your home country listed below under "Selection Process" to request more information. For more information, visit http://www.iie.org/Template.cfm?Section=Home&Template=/Activity/ActivityDisplay.cfm&activityid=70 .

Title: Information on Post-Secondary Foreign Language Education Legislation
Body: Regarding foreign language in education and more specifically in post-secondary education, you can go to the JNCL website, http://www.languagepolicy.org, where they have the information about the current national initiatives and proposed legislation for foreign language learning. There is currently a great number of articles on the importance of languages and the funding bills making their way through Congress. An additional source of information that is getting a lot of attention is international education. A great site for information on that topic is http://www.InternationalEd.org . The Asia Society has two reports out that might also be helpful. http://www.internationaled.org/statespreparefortheglobalage.htm In a similar document, the Asia Society directly addresses educational leadership in an article found at http://www.internationaled.org/educatingleaders.htm . Title: Spanish Jazz Chant: Lunch
Body: I had posted a Spanish breakfast food jazz chant and received positive feedback from many of you. I can only take credit for SHARING that chant, as my mentor had created the lyrics for it. However, since then, I made up my own jazz chant for eating lunch in a restaurant (it was part of a unit we were working on). My students had a lot of fun with it, and I hope some of you may find it useful too! I wrote it out on chart paper so the students could follow along and included color photos of some of the items in the chant (the different foods, check, hot soup, etc.) for my visual learners. Jazz Chant: Restaurant Lunch (with accompanying gestures) Por la tarde al almuerzo Yo tengo hambre (hold stomach). Yo tengo sed (hold throat). El menú por favor (open imaginary menu in hands). Vamos a comer (gesture eating with hand to mouth). Sopa por favor (stir imaginary soup). Sopa de tomate (take a bite of the soup). Qué caliente (gesture soup's too hot with hand)! Un sandwich por favor (both hands holding imaginary sandwich). No me gusta pollo (flap chicken wings!). No me gusta jamón (gesture cutting meat with fork and knife). El queso sí me gusta (point one finger up in the air to emphasize sí). De queso por favor. Ay qué rico! (rub stomach) La cuenta por favor (make universal restaurant check symbol with hand). No tengo dinero (show empty pockets). Voy a lavar los platos (gesture washing imaginary dishes). Qué lástima (gesture too bad)! Meisel, E. Spanish jazz chant - restaurant lunch. Title: Spanish Art Unit
Body: I break the students into 7 groups of 3 each (I don't think this project works well when students are able to work in groups of their choosing). Each group has the responsibility of researching and preparing a 45-min. presentation to give the rest of the class about their artist (El Greco, Velazquez, Picasso, etc. ). I give them about 4-5 days in class to work with their group and then they have about 2 weeks at home to work individually and with their group. I organize the presentations in the chronological order of the births of the artists and the groups present PP presentations or Web pages to the class during a 2-week span. Each group is also responsible for providing the class with a vocab sheet of terms used (to help with student understanding) and a guided notes outline (completely in Spanish of course). As part of their 45 minutes, they are to plan and carry out a 5-8 minute activity with the class. Their activity has to be something creative - not just Q/A and throwing out candy. The last day before the test (that I create based on their info) I let them choose an artist to copy with tempera paints and they try to reproduce the master works. They love this! The best part of this project in my mind is the responsibility that is put on each individual student. Not only are they the ones doing the work (and it's not me spoon-feeding it to them), but they all receive individual grades within the groups which goes a long way towards group peace and personal satisfaction after the project. Title: Recommended Canadian French Authors
Body: I beg those doing literature at the advanced level to include authors from Québec. I would include Québec poets Emile Nelligan, Michèle Lalonde, Raymond Levesque and Gilles Vigneault. Authors like Michel Tremblay, Yves Beauchemin, Felix Leclerc and Denise Boucher should not be overlooked. An excellent reference book is Littérature québécoise: Des origines à nos jours, published by HMH Hurtubise, Ville LaSalle, Quebec. Graham, D. Re: French readers level 4.
