Becoming familiar with classroom-based research methods not only enables teachers to do research in their own classrooms, it also provides a basis for assessing the findings of existing research. McKay emphasizes throughout that what a teacher chooses to examine will dictate which method is most effective. Each chapter includes activities to help readers apply the methods described in the chapter, often by analyzing research data. • Chapter I, Classroom Research, introduces the reader to major research purposes and research types as they relate to classroom research, the distinction between quantitative and qualitative research, the formulation of research questions and research designs, and ethical issues in research. • Chapter II, Researching Teachers and Learners, presents research methods that can be used to examine teachers' and learners' attitudes and behaviors: action research, survey research, interviews, verbal reports, diary studies, case studies, and ethnographies.*Chapter III, Researching Classroom Discourse, deals with methods that can be used to study the oral and written discourse of classrooms: interaction analysis, discourse analysis, text analysis, and ways to examine the social and political assumptions underlying the choice and presentation of content in second language teaching materials. • Chapter IV, Writing Research Reports, provides guidelines for both thesis writing and journal articles. Body: From http://www.iulma.es/jornadas/en/index.html 1st Conference on Modern Applied Languages 3-5 May 2006 The Interuniversity Institute of Applied Languages (IULMA) of the University of Alicante and the University of Castellón was set up by Decree 55/2005 of the regional parliament of Valencia in 2005. The purpose of the Institute is to foment theoretical and practical specialization in the field of Modern Applied Languages, also known as Professional and Academic languages. This Institute comprises professionals and specialists in different fields of knowledge (Law, Economics, Pharmacy, Architecture, Medicine, etc.). In accordance with the above, the aim of the Institute is to address the immediate needs of society by: 1. carrying out interdisciplinary research in the fields of systematisation and dissemination of specialized knowledge; 2. promoting and organizing teaching activities; 3. disseminating research findings. Therefore, the activities of the IULMA are carried out within the epistemological framework of interdisciplinarity, brought about by the information and knowledge society, so as to meet the scientific, business and social needs linked to the globalization of knowledge, science, technology and economy. This interdisciplinarity requires the creation of a new culture within the knowledge society and the promotion of collaboration among specialists and linguists, which means cooperation regarding the methods, aims and contents shared by two or more fields of knowledge in order to acquire a better understanding of reality. Body: Here are just a few more quick activities to have ready for those days when your students are quicker than usual. These require very little advance preparation. ---- Let them read whatever they want as long as it is in Spanish. Especially if you have a good and varied stock of reading material, I'll bet that class does much better overall than your other classes in the long haul. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (25 Sept. 2005). ---- I take my Scrabble game & remove 9 letters at random from the pouch (not sure how I arrived at that number) and write them on the board. Students work individually or in pairs & attempt to come up with as many words as possible using combinations of those letters. When time is up, we can see who had the longest list of words, the longest word, and/or the most original words. If time runs out, sometimes I will just collect the lists, check them over quickly, and award a bonus point to the winning students. I also use Taboo Junior, and I will often spend the last few minutes of class playing the game with my students. I pull out a card & try to describe the word without mentioning the 3 forbidden words beneath it. The students need to guess the word. Even though there are no winners/losers, they get a lot of satisfaction trying to guess what I am trying to describe. Of course, I end up having to skip over a number of cards simply because they don't know these words, but most of them are ones they should know. Hamwey, D. Re: Activities for extra class time.
