Title: Uwe Kind Concert in New Jersey
Body: Hopewell Valley Central High School will be hosting Uwe Kind in concert in September. All are invited to attend. I realize this is kind of early to be announcing this, but it is hard to organize a trip for so early in the school year without advance notice. If you are interested, please send me an email with the name of your school, contact person and approximate number of students. Here are the details: Date: September 28, 2006 Place: Hopewell Valley CHS - Pennington, NJ Time: 9:30 (or 10:00 ) - 11:00 (or 11:30) Eintritt: $5.00 Student presentation performances welcome Those of you who attended Uwe's concert 3 years ago will remember the excitement and energy pulsing through the hall! This year's concert will be in our new auditorium. We are also considering a Teacher Workshop with Uwe and would like feedback from interested parties. The possibilities are: a) Workshop same day as the concert, but in the afternoon. b) Workshop in the morning, concert in the afternoon. c) Workshop one day after the concert. The workshop lasts 3-4 hours and participants would receive materials from Uwe including one of his CD's. The cost would be $20.00 per person. (His CD costs $12.00.) Title: Recommended German Zoo Web Site
Body: I just found a great Web site for anybody doing a section on zoo animals. It has online activities for children as well as animals that can be printed out and glued together to form a 'stand up' animal. I will be using these to go over the animals as well as the colors and the continents the animals come from. I have just started a German language program at our local elementary school as an after school activity, seeing how German is not offered in our district, and am planning on using it for the age group K-5, but it could be used for older kids as well. Title: Advice for Teaching the French Subjunctive
Body: Here are a couple of recent suggestions for teachers of French whose students struggle with the subjunctive. ---- My first suggestion would be that you NOT project to the students that the subjunctive is "confusing and difficult". I start introducing simple subjunctive structures in the second month of the first year, and the kids don't know that it's supposed to be "difficult", so it's no big deal. We just add new uses from time to time and they develop the sense that it's just another feature of the language to be USED and incorporated in their communicative work. If you put it off to the 3rd or 4th year and approach it with fear and trepidation, as something really "academic" that has to be faced and "conquered", they will respond accordingly. Lee, R. I start out by telling them that they have to be open minded about the whole concept of having moods as well as tenses. I have lots of activities that involves emotions and reality vs non reality. One that they like is imagine that it is the night before your son or daughter's wedding. Title: Spanish-Speaking Culture Materials
Body: I have used a couple of elementary readers in my class titled "Chico Chile dice: Vamos a Mexico y Centroamerica" and "Chico Chile dice: Vamos a Suramerica." There is also one for Spain, I believe. They are very basic readings about each country that provide some simple cultural concepts. It has questions about the reading, but I usually type my own and add to their questions to make them a little more challenging. I usually give these as homework, or we occasionally read them in class. In addition, we usually take every other Friday and concentrate on one country. This may be in the form of watching a video about the country and answering questions or writing a list of facts about the country or doing an Internet scavenger hunt on basic facts and cultural info about the country. I've found that it breaks the monotony of doing stuff from the book, grammar, etc. all the time. They also have to label a map of the countries, know the capital and recognize the flag. Title: Call for Submissions: Trafford FirstVoices Publishing Program
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/17/17-601.html The First People's Cultural Foundation is now accepting submissions for the Trafford FirstVoices Publishing Program 2006. Preference given to completed manuscripts but all applications will receive full consideration. If you are writing a book in your Indigenous language, apply now! Over 6,500 indigenous languages around the world are severely endangered, with the last few remaining native speakers of many dialects dying each year. One publishing company is pledging over $1.6 million to help in the global race to document and teach these languages to youth. The United Nations Education, Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) established International Mother Language Day in 1999 to promote and celebrate mother tongues, the most powerful instruments of cultural preservation. UNESCO's goal for the 2006 event is to bring awareness to multilingual education and the role of languages in cyberspace. To advance this important global cause, Trafford Publishing is making a donation to underwrite approximately $1,600,000 in publishing costs over the next ten years. The programme will make available primers for school children, dictionaries and local stories -- one book will be published in each of 650 endangered languages.
