Title: Online German Exercises for Language Lab Use
Body: Recently, a German teacher posted the following message to the AATG-L listserv. His Web site offers a quick tutorial in creating online exercises for use in the language lab and includes links to a number of valuable resources. ---- I posted this last year, and since lots of people make resolutions about getting started with online activities when the new year begins, I thought I'd post it again. I wrote it for an inservice for our department. http://hschwab.com/lab.html Schwab, H. [AATG-L] Making online exercises. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. Title: Ideas for a 'Meet and Greet'
Body: A recent post to the FLTEACH listserv requesting ideas for a parent visitation night received the following replies. When I was teaching high school I would begin my parent night presentation with a listening activity the students had done in class that day. It only took a minute or two and the parents left with a little more understanding of what actually was happening in their child's class. Hinds, K. Re: meet and greet. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (10 Sept. 2005). ---- My favorite and a perennial hit with the parents was to ask them to count and do TPR stuff in French- stand, sit, smile. No English. I gave them a handout with essential information in English- contact phone number, email, grade break down etc. Sometimes we'd sing Sur le pont d'Avignon. The kids reported that their parents liked it. Ferree, R.M. Re: meet and greet. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (11 Sept. 2005).

Title: Ideas for an Airport Unit
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for activities for an airport unit received the following replies. ---- I used TPRS for this. I used the story and set up my classroom to be a travel agency, an airport and a plane and we pretended to take a trip to Spain making the preparations along the way. Cheek, H.R. Re: el aeropuerto. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (8 Sept. 2005). ---- Students work in pairs. One student is the agent and the other is the passenger who has lost their luggage and must fill out a "equipje perdida" report. Students practice filling out a ticket and boarding pass in Spanish (the tickets are copies from a trip I took) and then for part of the vocabulary quiz I pretend I am an agent welcoming the students on board to "AeroRomero" (yeah it's kind of cheesy but my middle schoolers get a kick out of it). Students have to fill out the ticket and boarding pass according to the info I give (flight number, time, destination/departure city, etc.) Romero, M. Re: el aeropuerto. Title: Online Spelling Practice for Adults
Body: A recent post to the TESL listserv requesting ideas for facilitating spelling practice with an adult English language learner received the following replies: ---- To me, nothing works better than C-tests. Have him work through the tests, from the grade 2 test on, until his spelling improves. Go to http://clozeonline.us .You won't even have to monitor what he does; you'll be surprised how fast it works. Blum, J.A. Re: Spelling practice for adults. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (7 Sept. 2005). ---- If your students have access to computers, you might direct them to one or more of the Web sites below. All of them offer either interactive spelling tests, multiple choice review of correctly spelled or misspelled words, or both. http://eslus.com/LESSONS/SPELL/SPELL.HTM http://www.usingenglish.com/quizzes/170.html http://www.spelling-tests.com van Troyer, G. Re: Spelling practice for adults. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (8 Sept. 2005). ---- Here is a site that I and my students have found very beneficial. It breaks down major spelling rules and offers a good number of quizzes for them to practice these newly acquired rules. http://english.glendale.cc.ca.us/phonics.html Douglass, M.
