Title: Ideas for Reading and Literature Activities
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for ideas to teach reading and literature received the following suggestions. ---- Divide story into sections, have each student (or group) create a 6-frame cartoon with dialogue bubbles and appropriate captions that retells the story. Using supporting information from the text, create a portrait of a character. Include more than physical traits. I ask that students use direct quotations from the text to justify their choices. Hornby, L. Re: Literature. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (23 Sept. 2005). ---- I use mini-plays and have students act them out to show understanding and help with fluency. I also have students make book jackets in the target language with a synopsis of the book. For working on fluency, create books on tape for your local Hispanic community. Hagemeier, L. Re: Literature. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (23 Sept. 2005). ---- Have the students retell the story in their own words, or even have them act out the story after they have read it. This helps reenforce the story as well as put a visual to what they are reading. Shannon, M. Re: Literature. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (23 Sept. 2005).

Title: Recommended Sources for Authentic Audio Downloads
Body: A recent query on the TESL listserv regarding sites for downloading authentic spoken text files received the following replies: ---- I recommend http://www.archive.org for its variety of texts as well as wonderful old records of Caruso and other early 20th century singers. Weiss, D. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Sept. 2005). ---- You might check out this resource link on the internet: http://iteslj.org/links/ESL/Listening/Podcasts . These links take you to a variety of podcasts (mp3 files) tailored for ESL/EFL students, which they can put onto their mp3 players. This link is for free audio books: http://www.free-books.org van Troyer, G. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Sept. 2005). ---- A podcast is a subscribable, downloadable audio file, usually in the mp3 file format. US National Public Radio has a directory of programs available for download: http://www.npr.org/rss/podcast/podcast_directory.php A searchable database of first person oral histories is located at Alexander Street press: http://www.alexanderstreet7.com/firp/ Odeo.com is a directory of podcasts on any imaginable subject: http://odeo.com/listen Swan, M. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Sept. 2005). ---- I think http://www.storycorps.net is just what you're looking for. Downloadable mp3 files are available on this site. Cascella, E. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Sept. 2005). ---- You can find some great podcasts at: http://www.mguhlin.net/blog/archives/2005/06/entry_227.htm Guhlin, M. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list. TESL-L@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (24 Sept. 2005). ---- There are a host of sites including NPR and the wonderful weekly show Studio 360 - http://www.wnyc.org/studio360/show.html - which features a section called Design for the Real World, a show that I use with much success on a regular basis. Incidentally, Studio 360 now also offers free podcasting which means that the show gets automatically sent to your computer once it has aired so that the next time you synch your iPod/ MP3 player, it loads the show onto your iPod - see Web site for details. If you are looking for a site that would allow students to download archived audio texts legally, then http://www.audible.com is the mother of all sites. Essentially you can buy, for a small fee, just about anything that has ever been aired, recorded for posterity (speeches), or for money (audio books). Once downloaded, the files can be burned onto a CD or to your iPod/ MP3 player. Friis, M. Re: Site for downloading audio material. Teachers of English to speakers of other languages electronic list.
