Title: Conference: Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum
Body: From: http://intl-programs.uiowa.edu/projects/CLAC_info.htm Cultures and Languages Across the Curriculum: Responding to a National Need November 5-6, 2005 Hosted by The University of Iowa, International Programs in collaboration with Binghamton University The Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) movement of the last two decades has made “global competence” a reality for many U.S. students. Still, very few U.S. colleges and universities have formal and securely-funded LAC programs. In most cases, LAC faces significant financial and structural challenges to its implementation. These challenges include: the lack of heritage learner communities or sufficient K-12 foreign language preparation; lack of funding to support LAC initiatives; suspicion or opposition, or lack of interest, on the part of faculty within the disciplines, including modern languages; and a lack of information about LAC goals and methodologies. This conference is designed for students, faculty members, international education professionals, and campus administrators interested in exploring the use of language and culture as a tool for internationalizing the curriculum across all disciplines. Teachers from elementary and secondary schools will find useful information that can be adapted to their instructional circumstances. Title: World Languages for Children Meetings
Body: West Windsor: The world is rapidly shrinking. Never before have so many people traveled internationally, settled in different countries, or taken their businesses online, and the numbers are rapidly growing. In contrast with our parents' generation -even with our own, most of our children will be living and working on a daily basis with people from Asia, South America, Europe and other parts of the world. An English-only education leaves our children at a linguistic and cultural disadvantage. It leaves our children behind. Many studies show that the best time to start learning languages is early childhood. In an effort to bring attention to the importance of learning other languages, a campaign was initiated by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) that was accompanied by a proclamation by the US Senate designating 2005 as The Year of Languages in the United States. October has been designated as the month to celebrate and promote early language learning. In the spirit of the Year of Languages and the month of October, when the benefits of early language learning are highlighted, the National Network for Early Language Learning (NNELL) in collaboration with Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ) would like to invite teachers, parents, and anyone interested in early language learning to participate in a series of informal meetings, entitled "World Languages Prepare NJ's Children for a Changing World." The purpose of these meetings is to share information on materials, resources, and topics related to early language instruction (Pr-K to 8th grade), as well as to form networks of interested individuals or groups. The first two meetings will be held on October 11 (7:00-9:00 P.M.), and 23 (3:00-5:00 P.M.) in West Windsor Library (333 North Post Road, Princeton Junction, NJ 08550). Subsequent meetings will take place bi-monthly. There's no fee to attend. RSVP and further information: Ana Lomba at 609-897-0273 or Ana@suenosdecolores.com Ana Lomba, Director of Sueños de Colores LLC, a company offering early language resources for young children, is the NJ Representative for NNELL and Public Relations Board Member for FLENJ. She is also Co-Chair of ACTFL's Language Learning for Children Special Interest Group. Lomba, A. NJ- World Languages for Children meetings. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Call for Papers: Academic Exchange Quarterly
Body: From: http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/4onlin.htm Online Learning Journal's annual feature, published in every winter issue Web-based instructional delivery has resulted in an explosion of “online learning” initiatives, technological innovations in education, and creative uses of the Internet. This focus is on ways of delivering instruction through asynchronous or synchronous methods either through online courses or by “hybrid” or “blended” courses. There are shifts in course reconceptualizations, course designs, instructional pedagogy, faculty training, and course learning outcomes. For instance, what are the best methods of teaching students to evaluate what they find on the Internet? How does placing a course online change the needs of students who seek information? How are teachers using smart classrooms, bulletin boards, listservs, blogs, and wikis? All innovative suggestions for instruction and technology for online learning are welcome. If you have useful experiences to share or have new ideas regarding instruction, technology, or information-gathering on the Web, please consider submitting an article. Who May Submit: Submissions are welcome from teachers, trainers, administrators, and graduate students (who must have a letter of support from a professor) who actively use computer-based instruction in some form. Please identify your submission with keyword: ONLINE Regular deadline: any time until the end of August 2005. Short deadline: September or October. For more information, visit: http://rapidintellect.com/AEQweb/4onlin.htm
