Title: Incorporating Art into the Foreign Language Classroom
Body: These resources and ideas for using art and music as part of a foreign language curriculum were recently posted on the FLTEACH listserv. --- Here's a veritable gold mine of a resource for those who enrich the study of civilization and literature with the use of art. This is well worth a bookmark. http://www.wga.hu/index.html The Web Gallery of Art is a virtual museum and searchable database of European painting and sculpture of the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods (1100-1850), currently containing over 13,900 reproductions. Commentaries on pictures, biographies of artists are available. Guided tours, free postcard and other services are provided for the visitors. Marsh, L. Art resource. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (22 Aug. 2005). ---- I read the excellent information on the FLTEACH FAQ page at http://www.cortland.edu/flteach/FAQ/FAQ-Art.html and got some very good ideas. Brownell, W. Art and foreign language. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (3 Sept. 2005). ---- With art, music, and literature I try to find out who's got a birthday when. If it's a hugely important composer or artist I'll spend the week with examples of their music playing when convenient, e.g., leaving, entering, writing assignments, or if an artist I'll bring in a new picture each day, if possible. Only the summer artists/composers take it on the chin, but one could have a separate week for The Overlooked too. I enjoy doing this and some of my students turn out to be real classical/art fans. Pontius, J.L. Art and foreign language. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (4 Sept. 2005). ---- I made a short PowerPoint that discussed the different types of art found in the museums in Madrid. With that background, students were to imagine that they were guides working for one of the museums and would be leading a group of high school students who had never before visited a museum. The guides had to create commands to tell what the students should/should not do during their visit. My students worked with a partner to generate a list with eight affirmative and eight negative commands. They then shared some of these with the class. This activity could be done without the visuals, but I think it made it more real and allowed them to mention some specific things about the museums from my presentation. Brownell, W. Title: Scholarship to Bamberg for Katrina Victims
Body: A scholarship from the Univ. of Bamberg, with which my university has an exchange, is being offered to a student or staff member who knows German and is at a college hit by the hurricane. All expenses will be paid for a year, a very generous offer. Please reflect on areas hit by Katrina and see if you know of any German instructors who would be able to have a student apply for this award. Classes start at the Univ. of Bamberg on Oct. 17 so there is still time to make preps and get there. A three-week Vorbereitungskurs is also offered by the Univ. of Bamberg for international students beginning Sept. 19. This would be a great help in preparing students for a year of courses there. Please contact Dr. Weihe's office directly if you know of someone who is eligible for the grant. See the message below for those details. Thanks for your help with this. ----------- With deep sympathy we took notice of the destruction caused by hurricane Katrina in the South of the United States. To express our appreciation for our American partner institutions, the Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg, Germany spontaneously decided to offer a stipend for an American student or member of staff personally affected by the hurricane. The stipend covers a whole academic year, beginning in the middle of October 2005. Many American colleges and universities in the destruction area are closed, and for some it is doubtful when they will be able to reopen again. Should you happen to know of a person in need, please draw his or her attention to this stipend. The University of Bamberg will cover tuition and fees as well as the return air fare to Germany, and will provide free room and board plus a daily allowance for the period of October 2005 through July 2006. Students and staff members from all areas of studies offered at the University of Bamberg (Humanities, Social Sciences, Business Studies and Informatics) are eligible. They should have a basic knowledge of German, however. Yours sincerely, Dr. Andreas Weihe Director of International Relations Otto-Friedrich-University Bamberg Bavaria, Germany For further information please contact: Ms. Kathrin Genk or Ms. Marion Echle: auslandsstudium@zuv.uni-bamberg.de www.uni-bamberg.de Pokorny, M. Title: Call for Trainers: Teacher-to-Teacher Training Corps
Body: From: http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tools/initiative/call-trainers.html The U.S. Department of Education has announced the formation of the Teacher-to-Teacher Training Corps. The corps will consist of effective teachers and practitioners who will provide on-site technical assistance and regional workshops for teachers and districts over the next 12 months. This team is an expansion of the Teacher-to-Teacher Workshops that have been offered in cities across the nation for the past two summers. We are looking for teachers and school leaders who are using scientifically based research strategies and have data to demonstrate effectiveness. Trainers will share the research underlying these practices and their experience with implementing them in classrooms and schools. The goal of the Teacher-to-Teacher Training Corps is to support district level professional development efforts by providing demonstrations by expert teachers and administrators of ways to improve academic performance through increased content knowledge and improved pedagogical skill. Participants should leave sessions with ready-to-use strategies and an understanding of why and when those strategies are effective. Your proposal must be received by Oct. 10, 2005. For more information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/teachers/how/tools/initiative/call-trainers.html

Title: OPI-Style Conversation Starter
Body: This timely activity idea was recently posted to the FLTEACH listserv by a French teacher. It could easily be modified for any language and might spawn other ideas for conversation starters. ---- I am preparing a unit in a conversation class. Students have studied telephone vocabulary and some Internet vocabulary, responded to about 30 brief situations, read texts about phone use, and now I want to give them an OPI style situation. Here is an example: "Your French friend's aunt was evacuated from New Orleans to Dallas, but you do not know the name of the shelter. There is a web site where you might get a lead by checking the names posted under each of the city's shelters. Once the aunt has been located, invite your friend to use the phone card you purchased for him. He must begin by dialing the 800 number listed on the card, he must then dial the password, followed by the digit one and the phone number of the shelter, beginning with the area code. He should then inform the shelter worker who he is and state with whom he wishes to speak and how he located that person. Explain it all in good French, as though your friend were with you." Peckham, B. An OPI style situation card (for French TBob). Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (8 Sept. 2005).
