Title: Activities for Native French-Speaking Students
Body: If you have native French speakers among your students, or if you have aids or visitors who speak French, the following ideas may be of help. ---- How about having them read simple stories to the rest of the class, and then basing a lesson on the story? This gives the class authentic pronunciation to listen to as well. Groleau, W. Re: elementary French native speakers. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (1 Sept. 2005). ---- 1. In pairs or individually, they can prepare class survey questionnaires for the other students on any topic (e.g. food preferences and dislikes when you are teaching foods). Then they can tabulate the results and share with classmates. 2. They can create a family tree for Francophone celebrities to share with their classmates (some Internet research could be used). 3. They can conduct authentic French children's games. 4. They can (as a group) create a monthly class newsletter, including their and other classmates' art work, cartoons, poems, stories, simple "did you know?" perhaps about authentic sports and cultural items... for sharing with parents. 5. They can write and illustrate with drawings and photographs, an "About Me" book and time line, telling about their experiences, for sharing with their classmates. Lipton, G. Re: elementary French native speakers. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (1 Sept. 2005).

Title: Helpful Ideas for New English Language Learners
Body: The following suggestions, recently posted to the FLTEACH listserv, were written in response to a request for ideas for helping elementary English language learners feel more comfortable in their new environment, but some may be useful for adult learners as well. ---- I have found that ESL students of any grade like to know about their school enviornment. Make them familiar with the routine - where is the bathroom, etc. A special visit to the principal, getting to know the name of the principal, the librarian (cafeteria workers are ntoriously soft hearted), give a list of student names to all these adults and their countries, get maps of the US, books with pictures of their home countries, etc. Teach them the school fight song or cheers, the name of the school team, the Star Spangled Banner and just a few fun songs (Bobby Mc Ferrin's 'Don't worry, Be Happy'). If you can do a team competition with all of this information, or word search, or crossword, so much the better. Albers, M. Re: 3rd grade ESL. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (7 Sept. 2005).
