Title: Authentic Writing Tasks
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for real-life writing tasks received the following suggestions, appropriate for learners of any language and a range of levels. ---- I've had students write letters to the makers of their favorite products. They almost always get a response, including coupons for freebies! Bellas, L. Re: Real-life writing tasks. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (16 May 2005). ---- More real-life writing tasks: a recipe, a note requesting a meeting with a child's teacher, a note to leave on the teacher's desk about why the student can't be in class, a book or product review for Amazon, a brief accident report (as on some car insurance forms), a memo suggesting something at work, an email to a boss requesting a change in schedule, a letter to the editor, a letter to a local politician about a neighborhood issue, a cover letter for a job application. When I am teaching immigrant adults in the US (non- academic English), especially those of middle age, I ask them to consider the fact that their future American grandchildren may not speak their (the future grandparents)native language. I ask them to write a family history in English, a story about an important event in the family's life, or a letter to their future grandchildren about what they would like the grandchildren to know about their culture and country of origin. This writing is to be a kind of legacy or keepsake for future generations, and is usually a big project including photos and other things. Spelleri, M. Re: Real-life writing tasks.
