TitleGerman's Imported Words
Body
Germany is not only exporting its words; today's spoken German is peppered with new words of foreign origins. What do the words leisure wear, special offers and finger food have in common? They are all finding their way into the German language, especially into the vocabulary of younger speakers. Words such as “latte macchiato” are becoming the hip replacement to German standards such as “Milchkaffee.” Sometimes a word or two may have to be explained, but “seersucker” is the “in” replacement to the unhip and more of a mouthful “leichte Hemden aus reiner Kräuselkreppbaumwolle.” Show your students how language is a living, evolving part of our lives with this “Schöner Schein” Sprachbar.
