Body: Tulane University's Language Learning Center seeks an IT specialist to provide training for our foreign language faculty in the pedagogical use of new technologies, to advise and assist them (where appropriate) in creating curricular materials, and to collaborate on the planning, securing, and implementation of grant and other funding projects. Qualifications include: Bachelor's degree in applied linguistics, foreign language pedagogy, instructional technology, or related field; training in second language acquisition; knowledge of foreign language pedagogy and technology; expertise in designing Web sites, digital graphics, and multimedia materials for instructional use; substantive knowledge of current Macintosh and Windows software and hardware; experience with digitizing and streaming media with video editing; experience with planning and writing grant proposals; interpersonal, leadership and organizational skills; skills in written and oral communication with both non-technical end users and technical staff; and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment. Title: Closing the Achievement Gap Conference 2005
Body: April 29, 2005 - Smith Memorial Center, Portland State University The second-annual Closing The Achievement Gap conference is a broad professional training and public awareness event for educators, administrators, community leaders and parents, giving them opportunities to participate in a variety of workshops on strategies, techniques, and programs that Oregon schools are using to close the achievement gap in their communities. Participants will learn how to strengthen staff training and implement effective accountability models, community resources, and research-based classroom practices in their school improvement plans to increase achievement for all student populations. Workshops and speakers will cover topics involving a variety of student groups, including ethnic minorities, students living in poverty and homelessness, students with disabilities, foster children, English language learners, and more. The conference will also address program design, instructional strategies, literacy, No Child Left Behind, and other federal programs. Closing the Achievement Gap Banquet April 29, 2005 - Portland Ballroom, Oregon Convention Center The evening banquet will take information from the conference one step further by highlighting schools that are meeting the challenge of closing the achievement gap head-on. What have they done to become so successful? What day-to-day actions and activities have helped make their programs work? Take home advice from these leaders as they specifically illustrate how their programs bring about results. The banquet will draw educators, administrators, community and business leaders from all over Oregon. Title: Summer Institute: Developing Materials for Less Commonly Taught Languages
Body: The summer institute"Developing Material for Less Commonly Taught Languages," will be offered July 11-15, 2005 at the University of Minnesota. This engaging institute led by Louis Janus and Bill Johnston provides LCTL teachers with practical tools and hands-on experience in designing a wide range of materials that will improve their students' abilities to use the language for communicative purposes. Note: In keeping with our commitment to support LCTL teachers, all participants who submit materials that are selected for inclusion on the CARLA website are entitled to a $125 rebate. This year CARLA will offer two summer institutes that support LCTL teachers in developing proficiency-based assessments, both of which will be led by Deniz Gökçora, the Coordinator of Assessment Projects at CARLA. In these workshops, participants will learn how to create proficiency-based assessment items using the ACTFL guidelines and resources in CARLA's Virtual Assessment Center. The first week-long institute will be held June 20 24, 2005 and will focus on creating reading and writing items and the second one offered June 27-July 1, 2005 will focus on creating listening items. There will be NO cost for instruction or materials; however the costs of transportation, accommodations, and food during the institute must be paid by the participant/participant's institution. Participation is limited and the priority deadline for applications is April 15, 2005.
