Title: Fellowships for Bilingual Math Education Doctoral Program
Body: From: http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/enews/2004/1116.htm#NEA CEMELA, the Center for Mathematics Education for Latinos/as, at UIC, offers a rare and outstanding opportunity for doctoral students who want to become leaders in Mathematics Education and contribute to the improvement of mathematics learning of Latinos/as. CEMELA offers financial support (doctoral study fellowships including summer) for full-time graduate study leading to a Ph.D. with an emphasis in Mathematics Education. Doctoral students will be expected to pursue a program of study that focuses on the mathematics learning of Latinos/as and that integrates language, culture, policy, and mathematics. Candidates can have a background in such areas as Bilingual Education, Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Latino Studies, Linguistics, Computer Science, or any other program of study. Persons interested in graduate study at UIC and CEMELA financial support should: - Apply to the College of Education at University of Illinois at Chicago by January 1, 2005. Body: June 2-4, 2005 Radisson-Metrodome Hotel Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Featured speakers at the conference will include: - Marilyn Cochran-Smith (Boston College), keynote speaker - Heidi Byrnes (Georgetown University) - B. Kumaravadivelu (San Jose State University) - Catherine Snow (Harvard University) The fourth International Conference on Language Teacher Education welcomes proposals for papers and symposia on all aspects of the education and professional development of language teachers. Papers and symposia may report on data-based research, theoretical and conceptual analyses, or best practices in language teacher education. The mission of the conference is to address the education of teachers of all languages, at all instructional and institutional levels, and in all the many national and international contexts in which this takes place, including: English as a Second or Foreign Language (ESL/EFL) instruction; foreign modern/world language teaching; bilingual education; immersion education; indigenous and minority language education; and the teaching of less commonly taught languages. The conference aims to bring together teacher educators from these many contexts to discuss and share research, theory, and best practices and to initiate and sustain meaningful professional dialogue across languages, levels, and settings. The conference will focus on the following four broad themes: * The Knowledge Base of Language Teacher Education; * Social, Cultural, and Political Contexts of Language Teacher Education; * Collaborations in Language Teacher Education; and * Processes of Language Teacher Education Proposals are more likely to be accepted if they address one of these themes.
