Title: Job Posting: English-Japanese translators
Body: Canvas Dreams is seeking an English to Japanese translation team. Our company has been working for a large and well-known electronics corporation. Today, they asked if we could provide them with English to Japanese translation services for a series of technical documents. Here are the project parameters so far: - Topic: "Data Sheets" or specifications for computer components (processors, LCD screens, power supplies, serial ports, etc.) - Original file format: Framemaker - Deliverable file format: Framemaker - Services: English to Japanese translation + editing (+ DTP)** - Size: 6 documents times ~75 pages apiece: about 15 of those pages contain mostly text, about 15 of those pages contain diagrams with lots of white space and a little text (part codes), about 45 of those pages contain tables of specifications. There are about 19,000 words per file, but keep in mind that many of those "words" are really "untranslatable" part codes or numbers (numbered list, ampere measurements). Please submit your CV and rates for technical translation, technical editing, and for DTP. It would also be helpful if you could provide a realistic (not rush) idea of how much time you would need for each step: translation, editing, and DTP. ** Desktop publishing in Framemaker is a negotiable item if you do not have this capability. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Virginia Anderson Translator & Writer French-Spanish-English ************************************** Canvas Dreams linguist@canvasdreams.com tel: +1.503.574.4277 fax: +1.503.214.5507 http://www.canvasdreams.com Anderson, V. Title: Call for Session Proposals: Heritage Languages in America 2005
Body: Research, Innovation and Policy in the Preservation of LCTLs in America January 6-8, 2005 Mission Valley Doubletree Hotel San Diego, California Featured speakers at the conference will include: - Scott McGinnis (Defense Language Institute), keynote speaker - Mimi Met (Center for Applied Linguistics) - Olga Kagan (UCLA) The first National Conference on Preservation of LCTLs welcomes proposals for papers and symposium on all aspects of the less commonly taught languages program development. Papers and symposium may report on language-specific research and materials development, professional development models, analysis of national and state educational policies and barriers to implementation of programs of the less commonly taught languages. The mission of the conference is to address the preservation and learning of heritage languages, at all instructional and institutional levels, and in all the many national and state contexts in which this takes place. The conference aims to bring together language educators and policy makers from these many contexts to discuss and share research, theory, and best practices and to initiate and sustain meaningful professional dialogue across languages, levels, and settings. The conference will focus on the following six broad themes: * Distance/distributed learning administration, infrastructure, and course delivery; * National policy and advocacy for world languages; * Online interactions and community; * Electronic resources for educators; * Innovative research in language acquisition; and * Teacher preparation and certification for less and least commonly taught languages. Proposals are more likely to be accepted if they address one of these themes. The deadline for submission of proposals for papers and symposium is November 30, 2004.
