Title: All students should learn 2nd language
Body: http://www.oregonlive.com/search/index.ssf?/base/editorial/ 1087301115179230.xml?oregonian?yedcrl This editorial speaks to many issues in the foreign language instruction debate in the state of Oregon. Mr. Landauer begins: Foreign language instruction in Oregon public schools illustrates one of the biggest disconnects between what we say, what we know and what we do. Nationally, foreign languages have been recognized as part of the core curriculum in the No Child Left Behind Act. In Oregon, the 2003 Legislature essentially demoted study of world languages to peripheral status.

Title: Bilingualism, Aging, and Cognitive Control
Body: APA Press Release available at: http://www.apa.org/releases/bilingual_aging.html WASHINGTON — Most will agree that two heads are better than one in solving problems. The same logic may be true for language and retaining cognitive processes as we age. Being fluent in two languages seems to prevent some of the cognitive decline seen in same-age monolingual speaking persons, according to the findings of a study appearing in this month’s journal of Psychology and Aging. The entire essay can be accessed at: http://www.apa.org/journals/pag/press_releases/june_2004/pag192290.pdf

Title: English as it's really spoken
Body: From the article: Slipping into class on a mild Thursday evening, Wadensky Bastien, who moved to Boston from Haiti 3-1/2 years ago, removes a rumpled piece of paper from his shoulder bag. It's cluttered with a week's worth of English phrases that he can't quite decipher. Glancing at the list, A.C. Kemp, who teaches the weekly class on American slang here at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, asks Mr. Bastien if he has any questions. "I have plenty," he replies brightly. Title: Article: (Student) Motivation: Where does it come from? Where does it go?
Body: Andrew Littlejohn has a lot to say on why we teachers are often boxed into becoming mere entertainers. Have a look at his always refreshing article on motivation at: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/A_Littlejohn/articles.htm In a nutshell, Littlejohn holds that if students have no personal stake in learning, if the material does not respond to their interest, if they are seen as empty receptors to be filled with information, then the teacher has little choice than to become an entertainer. On the other hand, if the course designer and teacher recognize that students know a lot about language and about themselves, and the materials are interesting in and of themselves, then students can construct their own meanings, in English, and are to some degree self-motivated.
