Title: NECTFL 2005 seeks EFL session proposals
Body: The Northeast Conference is always interested in suggestions for meaningful workshops and presenters on a variety of topics, appropriate for various levels, and in a variety of languages. At this time, we are seeking ideas for ESL. Attendees have requested future workshops specifically in this subject area. As a foreign language educator myself, I can attest to the value of the sessions presented annually at the Northeast Conference. Please consider making a significant contribution to the profession either by submitting a proposal for yourself or by bringing this opportunity to the attention of a colleague. The proposal form is accessible on our website, www.nectfl.org. Please be aware that the due date is Wednesday, June 30, which is approaching quickly! Additionally, please spread the word to your colleagues that we are also interested in presentations addressing all less commonly taught languages, immersion, FLES, ASL, classroom management, diversity appreciation/tolerance, and topics relevant to liberal arts college educators. Thank you for your consideration! Steely, J. The Northeast Conference wants YOU! Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (11 Jun. 2004).

Title: Adjective endings in German - a different approach
Body: http://german.about.com/library/weekly/aa021599.htm In this guest article by Prof. Eckhard Kuhn-Osius (Hunter College, CUNY) you'll discover a different way of dealing with adjective endings in German- an approach that avoids thinking in terms of charts and complicated rules. This simplified method only requires you to ask yourself two simple questions. If you're frustrated with charts and rules for adjective endings, try this different way of looking at German grammar. If you like charts and rules, we have those, too! Flippo, H. About German: Der Euro - Arnie's Austria (Fotos). (11 Jun. 2004).

Title: Video Information Gap Activities
Body: I am a graduate student at the University of South Florida and I read an article in one of my classes that talks about an "Information-Gap Activity" that can be created using a technique called video split, in which half of a class views, with the sound turned off, a videotext that has five or six speaking actors. The other half of the class hears only the sound and does not see the visual aspects of the videotext. The teacher then pairs the students, one viewer with one listener, and assigns each pair the task of recreating the conversation(s) in the videotext. Students verify the accuracy of their recreation by watching the videotext with sound. Does anyone have any experience with this activity? Iglesias, S. (9 Jun. 2004). Integrating Video into Language Instruction. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (11 Jun. 2004). Editor's Note: I found an interesting site regarding teaching with video techniques that discusses some of the same practices. The reference is as follows: Pearson Education. (2001). Techniques for teaching with video. Family Album, U.S.A. http://www.longman.com/Family_Album/techniqu.html (11 Jun. 2004).

Title: TOEFL: the next generation
Body: A new generation of TOEFL will start officially in September 2005, although it is being tested in different places now (I believe). From the website and some presentations I have been to, while a good bit of the "old" TOEFL remains, there appear to be more integrated tasks and more productive tasks. They even include an interactive glossary... http://www.ets.org/toefl/nextgen/integrate.html Stanley, K. (6 Jun. 2004). new generation TOEFL? Title: Conference: English Language Learners Struggling to Learn
Body: From: http://www.nccrest.org/ell_conference.html NCCRESt presents...National Research Conference ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS STRUGGLING TO LEARN: Emergent Research on Linguistic Difference and Learning Disabilities November 18-19, 2004 The SunBurst Resort, Scottsdale, AZ Now accepting registrations - space is limited! Presenters include: Alfredo Artiles, Leonard Baca, Manual Barrera, Jim Cummins, Kathy Escamilla, Richard Figueroa, Todd Fletcher, Gene Garcia, Michael Gerber, Diane Haager, Janette Klingner, Nonie Lesaux, Jeff McSwan, Jamal Obedi, Alba Ortiz, Robert Rueda, Nadeen Ruiz, Richard Ruiz, and Sharon Vaughn. Co-sponsored by Arizona State University, Council for Exceptional Children, and the National Association for Bilingual Education, the conference will present original, emergent scholarship on the differences between second language acquisition and learning disabilities. The impetus for the conference is the unprecedented growth of the English language learner population, the emergence of empirical evidence about the number of inappropriate referrals of ELLs to special education, the challenges associated with distinguishing between the characteristics of "normal" second language acquisition and learning disabilities, and the alarming dearth of research on these and related issues. What will the conference cover? • Original research with English language learner populations focused on differentiating between second language acquisition and learning disabilities • Analytical perspectives on ELL issues • Synthesis of the research on English language learners • Population, referral, assessment, and instructional issues
