Title: Article: Learning a Language From an Expert, on the Web
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/29/technology/personaltech/29basics.html?_r=1 Learning a Language From an Expert, on the Web By PETER WAYNER July 28, 2010 If there is any truth to the old Russian proverb that enemies parrot yes while friends say no, then it is easy to form fast friendships on Livemocha.com, a Web site devoted to helping people learn languages by swapping messages over the Internet and then correcting each other’s messages. Livemocha, a Seattle company with $14 million in venture capital financing, mixes a social network with lessons for more than 38 of the world’s more common languages. Not every service is as well structured. MyLanguageExchange.com just maintains lists of people who know certain languages and want to learn others. Anyone can search the database, but only gold members, who pay $24 a year, can send e-mail easily to others. In a new video game developed in Brazil, a young indigenous boy named Jeró helps break down the stereotypes of the worldwide video game industry while teaching about the history of colonialism. Jeró, a Tupiniquim Indian, is the hero of "França Antártica", a new video game developed by a team from the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in the city of Niteroi, located across Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro. The third-party action game takes place in the 16th century, a period in history when the French, lead by Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon, invaded Guanabara Bay with the mission of founding a new colony to be called França Antártica (Antarctic France). Title: German for Hire: Bring a German into Your Classroom
Body: Hey, Northern California teachers! Need a German in your classroom? The Goethe-Institut San Francisco wants to help you out with their new program, German for Hire. German for Hire brings together students from Germany enrolled at an American university and American high school students curious about modern-day Germany. In 2007 the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI) in Tübingen (Germany) launched Rent an American. The program matches American students enrolled in study-abroad programs in Germany with local classrooms focusing on the United States in their curricula. The program has proven so popular with students and teachers alike that by now hundreds of American students from all over Germany’s southwest have visited classrooms to talk about topics ranging from climate change to baseball and "The Simpsons". The Rent an American concept is now coming to the United States. The Goethe-Institut San Francisco, in close collaboration with the Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut, invites college students from Germany and teachers in the U.S. to make German for Hire just as successful as its German counterpart. Following a pilot phase in Northern California, German for Hire will be expanded to other regions. Learn more about German for Hire at http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/saf/prj/gfh/enindex.htm
