Title: Native Voices Heard at National Language Summit
Body: From http://www.indiancountrytoday.com/living/education/Native-voices-heard-at-national-language-summit-98604829.html Native voices heard at national language summit By Rob Capriccioso July 20, 2010 Native languages are alive and well, and they need the federal government to help their voices flourish. That was the message of a group of Indian educators who gathered for the National Native Language Revitalization Summit on Capitol Hill July 13 – 14 to make legislators and administrators aware of their concerns and desire for support. Meetings with Congress members and Obama administration officials took place throughout, and some federal officials took part in the event, promising to help strengthen Native languages. Title: New Online Resource for Sirat Bani Hilal
Body: The Sirat Bani Hilal Digital Archive is an open access resource for the preservation and dissemination of audio recordings, written texts, photographic images, and other materials related to the Epic of the Bani Hilal tribe. All of these materials are available for use by researchers and teachers without charge (see section on Copyrights & Permissions). We ask only that any use of these texts include an attribution to the Archive (and, in the case of the English translations and photographs, that Dwight F. Reynolds be cited as translator/photographer). The Archive will eventually house 50 hours of English translations, over 150 hours of Arabic transcriptions, and over 250 hours of audio recordings from performances of the Sirat Bani Hilal oral epic poem recorded in Egypt in 1986-87. Of particular note should be the Virtual Performance section of the Archive where viewers can listen to an audio-recording while reading a synchronized line-by-line translation of the performance in both Arabic and English. This is meant to be used as both a teaching and research tool. The site also includes a brief historical introduction, photo galleries, an extensive bibliography on SBH, a listing of online resources, and passages from my original fieldnotes. Title: Germany’s Multicultural Generation: Two Germans Called Özil and Khedira
Body: From http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/en/__pr/GIC/2010/07/07__GenerationM__PM.html Two Germans Called Özil and Khedira - Football is Just the Beginning ... By Roger Boyes July 7, 2010 Generation M gave a kick-start to this year's World Cup in South Africa and, at a stroke, changed Germany's image. No longer is "Germany" a collection of serious white men determined to destroy the opposition with almost scientific thoroughness. No, in the eyes of the world, Germany has some of the most exciting players on the planet. So who exactly are Generation M? Look at the goal-scorers in the country's opening match against Australia: two Germans born in Poland, one German German, one Brazilian German. And the goals were set up by a Turkish German, Mesut Özil. "M" stands for "multi-culti" - multi-cultural. Title: New French Pronunciation Resource
Body: From http://www.utm.edu/staff/globeg/lab.shtml French Learning Objects (http://www.utm.edu/staff/globeg/dmlearnfr.html ) is a tutorial designed by Dr. Robert D. Peckham for University of Tennessee-Martin students in French courses 111, 115, 122 and 222. The part devoted to French pronunciation has just been revised. It gives general guidance on oral performance, a spectrum of advice on pronunciation, from general to fairly sophisticated phonetic concepts; recordings of textbook vocabulary, audio-out dictionaries; the largest collection of available online text to speech apps anywhere (so you can type in your answer to ex. 3 # 5, and get a recording to pronounce in class); and something about UTM’s use of Wimba voice tools. The revised Pronounce It Right in French! page is available at http://www.utm.edu/staff/globeg/speakfrench.html Browse more resources from the Muriel Tomlinson Language Resource Center at http://www.utm.edu/staff/globeg/lab.shtml
