Title: University of Arizona Researchers Help Preserve Scottish Gaelic
Body: From http://uanews.org/node/32670 UA Researchers Help Preserve Scottish Gaelic By La Monica Everett-Haynes July 29, 2010 Andrew Carnie, a UA linguistics professor, is heading a research project to analyze and document Scottish Gaelic, a language that is slowly being lost because natives more readily are learning and speaking English. Carnie’s team intends for the research – which involves modern instrumental and experimental measurements – to boost preservation efforts and improve what is understood about the language. One practical goal of the project is to provide a base-line measure of the speech of native speakers to use in creating materials to use in teaching the language to younger people. Title: Learning German with the Deutsch-Uni Online
Body: Some 100 million people speak German as their mother language, and the language remains central to business and research. One of the easiest ways to learn German from anywhere in the world is with the portal Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO). DUO provides more than just language instruction with its online courses, covering everything from an overview of the language to cultural anecdotes and subject-specific vocabulary for various sectors including medicine and law. The DUO also provides its students - those who either want to study, research or work in Germany - a chance to become part of a global German language-learning network. For beginners there are platforms in English, French, Russian, Chinese and in the future, Arabic. The exercises are oriented to daily life and current events, often making use of videos and animations to explain complex grammatical themes. Specially trained tutors are available to assist students by e-mail or chat, as well as by telephone. Students can interact with one another in forums and through cooperative exercises. Among the DUO course offerings are: Basic Level (basis-deutsch), for those needing a basic knowledge of the language; Intermediate Level (uni-deutsch), preparing those who want to study in Germany; Advanced Level (fach-deutsch), for subject-specific language training; and Business (profi-deutsch), for young professionals looking to enter the German career market. The DUO portal is supported by the Institute for German as a Foreign Language at Munich's LMU university and GAST, the supporting organization of the Sprachtest TestDaF. Presently around 3,500 students worldwide are learning German with DUO. Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO) is available at http://www.deutsch-uni.com/gast/duo/info/index.do?do=index

Title: Article: Graffiti on Pompeii’s Walls
Body: From http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Reading-the-Writing-on-Pompeiis-Walls.html Reading the Writing on Pompeii’s Walls To better understand ancient Rome, one archaeologist looks at the graffiti, love notes and poetry alike, left behind by Pompeians By Kristin Ohlson July 27, 2010 From the very beginning, archaeologists noticed copious amounts of graffiti on the outsides of buildings in Pompeii. In the late 1800s, scholars began making careful copies of Latin inscriptions throughout the ancient Roman world, including Pompeii, and cataloging them. This effort is a boon to scholars, since more than 90 percent of Pompeii’s recorded graffiti have since been erased by exposure to the elements. Title: Research and Policy Brief: Challenges in Evaluating Special Education Teachers and English Language Learner Specialists
Body: National Comprehensive Center for Teacher Quality announces new research and policy brief: Challenges in Evaluating Special Education Teachers and English Language Learner Specialists July, 2010 Most teacher evaluation systems focus on student achievement and teacher practice; however, few systems have the capacity to differentiate among specialty-area educators, address the challenges in accurately measuring achievement growth for their students, and connect that growth to teacher effects. Questions arise as to how these interdependent foci may vary for at-risk populations and how evaluation systems should best reflect this variation. These are questions that the TQ Center set out to answer in the latest TQ Research & Policy Brief: Challenges in Evaluating Special Education Teachers and English Language Learner Specialists. The brief offers policy and practice recommendations for regions, states, and districts to help in their efforts to create valid, reliable, and comprehensive evaluation systems for all teachers as they work to improve the achievement of all students. The authors are Lynn R. Holdheide, Laura Goe, Ph.D., Andrew Croft, and Dan Reschly, Ph.D. To access the brief in pdf format: http://www.tqsource.org/publications/July2010Brief.pdf
