Title: Back-to-School Activity
Body: In a video recently posted on the Actualidades blog, two people from Spain interview Domingo, a 10-year-old boy, about his feelings upon returning to school. There is a worksheet to accompany the video. The first part has comprehension questions, the second part is an interview based on the same questions that they ask him, and the third part is a Comparison/Contrast section in which students compare their own answers to his. Here's the link: http://zachary-jones.com/spanish/archives/20981 It would be a really great ice-breaker activity for Spanish 3 and up! Jones, Z. [FLTEACH] Cute interview and Back-to-school icebreaker questions. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 12 Aug 2010).

Title: Reviews Find ELL Programs Lacking in Four Districts
Body: From http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2010/07/30/37proficiency.h29.html?tkn=MSCCE7lhA7px8ErPiUx8QRwvZFNzB7D0Px6R&cmp=clp-sb-ascd Reviews Find ELL Programs Lacking in Four Districts By Mary Ann Zehr July 30, 2010 Four urban districts—in Boston; Buffalo, N.Y.; Portland, Ore.; and Seattle—did not provide special help to learn English to all students entitled to it under federal law, according to reviews of those school systems over the past two years. In a written statement earlier this month, Thomas E. Perez, the assistant attorney general for the civil rights division of the Justice Department, laid out some guidance for districts. “All English-language-learner students have the right to appropriate language-support services until they achieve English proficiency,” he says, “and when educational agencies terminate such services prematurely, they deny these students the equal educational opportunity that federal law guarantees them.” Read the full article at http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2010/07/30/37proficiency.h29.html?tkn=MSCCE7lhA7px8ErPiUx8QRwvZFNzB7D0Px6R&cmp=clp-sb-ascd

Title: Beginning of School Ideas, Part 1
Body: Another school year is beginning, and here are some resources and ideas to help you get off to a great start: --- Are you hoping to incorporate more technology into your classroom? A blog article, 11 Techy Things for Teachers to Try This Year, is available at http://www.freetech4teachers.com/2010/08/11-techy-things-for-teachers-to-try.html --- If you have enough room to move around, give them a sign-in sheet....stuff like: (these would be for Level one class) Has eaten in a Mexican restaurant (not Taco Bell) Can sing a song in Spanish Knows who Alfonso Cuaron is Knows who Oscar de la Hoya is Can name a country that speaks Spanish that is NOT Mexico Has a family member who speaks Spanish Can say "I love you" in Spanish Then go over these....tell them about your local restaurants that serve Mexican food. Remind them of songs they know (or show them a video!) Tell them that Cuaron directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban That de la Hoya is a famous boxer And so on..... I like to point out things in the community and have them start noticing aspects of the culture right away: billboards in the language, products they can buy in local stores, etc. Blaz, D. Re: [FLTEACH] first days of school. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 21 Jun 2010). --- I give some M & M's and have them take a handful...organize them by color.... but not eat them right away. Then they have to write and/or speak in order to eat them. For Level 3's it would be something like this: (I vary it from year to year.) For RED they have to tell me something about themselves YELLOW something they did over the summer GREEN something about their family BLUE something they want to do this year BROWN is "student choice" I might have them tell me the Reds (speaking to me) Write down the Yellows (gives me a good idea how well they remember the past tenses) and hand it in. Interview a partner about the Greens: Do you have a sister? (if the partner does, they can eat one green, etc. until they are out of green candies) Write the Blues on the board, and so on.... Blaz, D. Re: [FLTEACH] First day, level 3 icebreaker ideas?? Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 26 Jul 2010).
