VeinteMundos makes the language, culture and people of those 20 “mundos” more accessible to you. Journalists from Spain and Latin America write interesting reports and articles about everyday life and culture in their homelands. Alongside, Latinos tell us about their experiences in Europe, and Europeans and Americans about their experiences and travels in Spain and Latin America –all in Spanish, of course. The texts are accompanied by key vocabulary and are written in varying degrees of difficulty, so that you can practice and refresh your Spanish in an efficient and enjoyable way. Body: From http://www.sltrib.com/sltrib/neighborhood/midvalley/49899041-126/reque%C3%B1a-english-students-parents.html.csp Midvale teacher inspires students, parents By Alicia Greenleigh July 14, 2010 Maria Requena, a first-grade teacher at Midvale Elementary, won a Golden Apple Award for Outstanding Educator, sponsored by the PTA and KUED. She was recognized for her innovative methods of teaching English to native-Spanish speakers. She has also made an impact on students’ families by showing parents how to help their children practice, as well as learn English themselves. Requena began teaching at Midvale 15 years ago. She was the only teacher at the time who could speak Spanish, and was given students who were having a difficult time picking up the curriculum. During her first months at Midvale, she realized her students had little to no education in either language, which is why they were not learning. So Requena decided to teach solely in Spanish for three months to give the children a basic foundation in phonics, vocabulary, reading and writing. And it worked. As the year progressed, her students were understanding and retaining English. Body: Title of Activity: Street Signs Language: Any language (example in Italian) Proficiency Level: Elementary, Intermediate, or Advanced (This lesson can be adapted to any level.) Brief description of the activity: Students study a photo of a street sign in Milan, Italy, and reflect on the differences between street signs in US cities and those in Italian cities. Objectives: To introduce students to street signs in the target culture with a focus on ACTFL Standards 2.2 and 4.2: Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied. Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own. Title: Report: Meeting the Challenge: Preparing Chinese Language Teachers for American Schools
Body: As American students, parents, schools, and districts are recognizing the importance of being able to understand and communicate with China, this recognition has led to significant growth in Chinese language programs over the past five years. Indeed, demand seems likely to continue to increase. The most significant barrier to the expansion of opportunities for students to learn Chinese is the lack of trained and certified teachers. Asia Society has produced a new report: Meeting the Challenge: Preparing Chinese Language Teachers for American Schools. The results of this report were presented at the 2010 National Chinese Language Conference, and the report is now available online. Meeting the Challenge analyzes the current status of and demand for Chinese language programs and proposes ways to expand and enhance the supply of Chinese language teachers, increase their effectiveness, and produce teachers for new innovations in elementary and online language programs. Title: Call For Papers: Special Issue of Language Learning and Technology
Body: Theme: Hegemonies in CALL Guest Editors: Marie-Noëlle Lamy and Mark Pegrum An assumption that the technologies, pedagogies, educational and sociocultural norms associated with CALL are universal has implicitly permeated much of the discipline’s research over the past two decades. In this issue we will draw together critical perspectives that problematise the workings of hegemonies. By “hegemony,” we understand a situation where one culture or one form of praxis predominates and deliberately or not, prevents the development or continued viability of alternative cultures and forms of praxis. We will assemble a provocative collection, from a multicultural, multilingual group of contributors, contrasting voices from the Anglosphere with voices from less well-served territories/cultures to ensure a rich dialogue between and around articles. We particularly welcome proposals for articles that include less well-researched languages, student cohorts and teaching contexts.
