Title: U.S. Department of Education: Seeking Peer Reviewers (Field Readers)
Body: The U.S. Department of Education (ED), Office of English Language Acquisition (OELA), Native American and Alaska Native Children in School Program (NAM) is seeking peer reviewers (field readers) with experience in ESL and American Indian/ Alaska Native Education programs to read and evaluate discretionary grant applications for FY 2011. Availability dates: February 4, 2011 to February 15, 2011 Description: The Peer Reviewer will read 2 applications (maximum 35 pages each) per day, and be available to conference with the panel every day. The application review process involves orientation, reading and evaluating applications, and discussions with other panelists. Panelists will evaluate and score applications using the U.S. Department of Education's published selection criteria. Selected field readers will receive a copy of each assigned application electronically. Some applications will be mailed to readers, if the applicant had an approved waiver. They will review applications at their home and enter comments and scores on each application electronically into the Department's G5 e-Reader database. Paneling of applications will be conducted through pre-scheduled telephone conference calls that require the participation of all panel members. All scores and comments must be entered into the G5 e-Reader by the designated date. No travel to Washington, D.C. will be necessary. Application Process: Please email your resume providing information about your educational background and expertise, technology skills, grant reading history, and program experience history to Itzetht.testa-sanchez@ed.gov Vendors and individuals who do business with the Department must also register in the Central Contractor Registration (CCR) System and acquire a DUNS number. The CCR is maintained by the Department of Defense. It is a Web-based database of business information on more than 290,000 registered vendors. It is well established, well known, widely used, and provides for fast, free and easy registration. Please read the information regarding vendor registration in the CCR. The NAM program will be using the G5 e-Reader System www.g5.gov the Department's electronic field reading system to review grant applications. Field readers must have the following in order to use the G5 e-Reader: * Access to the Internet from home; * Microsoft Word; and * Cookies and JavaScript enabled in the browser. Field readers will receive a flat fee honorarium for the entire review period based on the established number of reading days and applications. Since the number of reading days and applications to be reviewed may vary, you will be informed of the amount of the honorarium at the time of your selection as a field reader. We will accept resumes until November 1st, 2010. Potential selected reviewers will be notified by email to schedule a telephone interview.

Body: Job Description The mission of the Army Culture and Foreign Language Management Office (ACFLMO) is to manage the implementation of the Army Culture and Foreign Language Strategy (ACFLS). Up to 15 Culture and Foreign Language Advisors (CFLAs) are being sought for placement at the TRADOC (Training & Doctrine) Centers of Excellence (CoE). Their primary function will be to assist CoE leaders by working to infuse culturally oriented emphasis into CoE programming. By Mackenzie Carpenter July 19, 2010 Once upon a time, they were known as The Big Three: Spanish, French and German, and they are still the top three languages taught in colleges across America — although Spanish leads the other two by a mile. Ach!! Is French passe? Is German kaput? Not exactly, but signs of decline are there, locally and nationally: Some of Pennsylvania's state-owned universities are seriously debating whether to offer French and German majors after current students graduate. Enrollment in French classes is shrinking in Pittsburgh's public schools, and one high school is considering phasing out its longtime German program. Shady Side Academy, a private school with campuses in Fox Chapel and the East End of Pittsburgh, is eliminating French and German from its middle school curriculum to focus on Spanish, Mandarin and Latin. The recipients will receive some access to Google tools, technologies and expertise. Over the next year, Google will provide selected subsets of the Google Books corpus—scans, text and derived data such as word histograms—to both the researchers and the rest of the world as laws permit. Push for Foreign-Language Teaching in ESEA By Mary Ann Zehr July 21, 2010 Two Democrats from the U.S. House of Representatives said at a policy briefing yesterday on Capitol Hill that they plan to introduce a bill that would authorize $400 million in funding for fiscal 2011 for the teaching of foreign languages to K-12 students. They hope the bill will become part of the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. A description of the bill handed out at the briefing said it would provide $100 million for the U.S. Department of Education to take a leadership role in supporting the teaching of foreign languages, such as coordinating with the departments of state, defense, and commerce to promote best practices for language teaching. Some of the money would provide scholarships for students and teachers to study abroad. Another $100 million would go to states to "expand and articulate" statewide efforts for language learning. Lastly, the bill draft proposes that $200 million pay for grants from the Education Department to "partnerships" that would develop and expand model foreign-language programs.
