She was recognized for her innovative methods of teaching English to native-Spanish speakers. She has also made an impact on students’ families by showing parents how to help their children practice, as well as learn English themselves. Requena began teaching at Midvale 15 years ago. She was the only teacher at the time who could speak Spanish, and was given students who were having a difficult time picking up the curriculum. During her first months at Midvale, she realized her students had little to no education in either language, which is why they were not learning. So Requena decided to teach solely in Spanish for three months to give the children a basic foundation in phonics, vocabulary, reading and writing. And it worked. As the year progressed, her students were understanding and retaining English.
