Title: Sociological Initiatives Foundation Offers Grants to Support Social Change Research
Body: The Sociological Initiatives Foundation, which was established to support research that furthers social change, including language learning and behavior and its intersection with social and policy questions, is accepting concept applications for its annual grant program. The foundation specifically supports research that focuses on social policy objectives, institutional and educational practices, legislative and regulatory changes, linguistic issues (e.g., literacy, language loss and maintenance, language policy, language and national security, bilingualism, language and gender, language and law, language disabilities, language and health, language and education, different language cultures), and development of community capacity and organization of previously unorganized groups. Funded research should ideally build an organization or constituency's potential to expand public knowledge, impact policy, and create social change. Examples of eligible applicants include academic-community partnerships, advocacy or community groups that conduct research that can withstand challenge in academic and policy arenas, and academics that organize or link to a constituency through their research. The foundation makes grants to nonprofit 501(c)(3) organizations and academic institutions and other qualified organizations wishing to sponsor research projects by individual scholars or practitioners. The foundation does not make grants directly to individuals. The foundation's geographic focus is limited to the United States and its territories. Grant amounts typically range from $10,000 to $20,000 each. Complete program information is available at the foundation's Web site:http://comm-org.wisc.edu/sif Deadline: August 15, 2010

Title: Utah Trying Out Dual-language Immersion Classes
Body: From http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700045187/Utah-pushing-language-immersion-curriculum.html Utah trying out dual-language immersion classes Spanish, Chinese, French being taught to children from Day 1 of their education By Elizabeth Stuart July 7, 2010 6-year-old Kari Thompson is one of thousands of Utah elementary school students enrolled in a foreign language immersion program. For half the day, when working on reading and writing, these students study in English. For the other half, when studying math, science and social studies, they take class in Chinese, French or Spanish. In theory, students should be fluent in a foreign language by the time they graduate high school. It has been only two years since Utah legislators secured funding to experiment with immersion education, but already the state has 51 programs up and running. Fourteen more are set to take off this fall. By 2014, educators hope to have 30,000 of Utah's students signed up. Title: Editorial: A Better Welcome for Our Nation's Immigrants
Body: From http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/02/AR2010070204359.html?hpid=opinionsbox1 A better welcome for our nation's immigrants By Jeb Bush and Robert D. Putnam July 3, 2010 One important difference separates immigration then and now: We native-born Americans are doing less than our great-grandparents did to welcome immigrants. A century ago, religious, civic and business groups and government provided classes in English and citizenship. Historian Thomas P. Vadasz found that in Bethlehem, Pa., a thriving town of about 20,000, roughly two-thirds of whom were immigrants, the biggest employer, Bethlehem Steel, and the local YMCA offered free English instruction to thousands of immigrants in the early 20th century, even paying them to take classes. Today, immigrants face long waiting lists for English classes, even ones they pay for. Why is this important? A legal immigration system is the not-so-secret edge in a competitive, interconnected world economy. Immigrants enhance our ability to grow and prosper in the dynamic global marketplace. We will need every possible advantage to expand our economy amid its fiscal challenges. Moreover, the aging of our population places a premium on young, productive workers, many of whom must come from immigration. Title: Article: Program Gives Chicago Teachers a Lesson in History, Culture
Body: From http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chicago/ct-x-c-cps-teachers-workshop-0630-20100630,0,4913831.story Program gives Chicago Public Schools teachers a lesson in history, culture By Lisa Pevtzow June 30, 2010 Last week, 25 Chicago Public Schools teachers took a whirlwind tour of multicultural Chicago, listening intently as members of different ethnic groups talked of their history, language and culture through the lens of their own experience. Throughout the week, the teachers toured Chicago's Chinatown neighborhood, studied Mesoamerican creation myths at the National Museum of Mexican Art and heard powerful stories of immigration and integration by members of the Indian-American community at the Indo-American Heritage Museum in West Rogers Park. "The idea is right," David Stovall, an assistant professor of policy studies in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, said of the CPS initiative. "Many times these stories have been excluded from textbooks and traditional academic resources, and they are important."
