Title: Los Angeles School District Adopts World Language Resolution
Body: The Los Angeles Board of Education officially adopted a Chinese, Spanish, and other World Languages Resolution. This is a major feat for the second largest school district in the U.S. Currently, high school graduation requires only two years of the study of a language and there are only about 1,000 students learning Chinese. The Resolution states, "all students, regardless of their home language, should be provided with the opportunity to study at least one language, in addition to English, beginning in elementary grades and continuing their study sequence for 6 to 8 years in order to achieve a high level of proficiency." Title: Presentation: Hollywood Speaks German
Body: Hollywood Speaks German Stefan Droessler, Director of the Munich Film Museum Presentation with Film Excerpts Presented in English This presentation focuses on the beginnings of sound in film when Hollywood produced many films in many different languages – German among them. Between 1930 and 1932 all Hollywood studios produced films in German to better export them. They hired German stars like Heinrich George, Paul Morgan or Camilla Horn, flying them in from Germany. Or they used German speaking actors living in Hollywood like Greta Garbo, Edward G. Robinson or Marion Lessing. Some actors who were very popular in Germany, like Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy and Buster Keaton had to phonetically learn to pronounce German words. Listen to them speak German with a funny accent while comparing the clip with the American version. Film excerpts from forgotten classics highlight this entertaining lecture. Presentation with Film Excerpts Wednesday, December 3, 2008, 6pm Goethe-Institut Chicago 150 N Michigan Ave, Suite 200 Suggested Donation $ 5 RSVP with Lisa Lux: lux@chicago.goethe.org Tel. +1 312 263 0472
