Title: North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad
Body: From http://www.naclo.cs.cmu.edu This olympiad is a contest in which high-school students solve linguistic puzzles. In solving the problems, students learn about the diversity and consistency of language, while exercising logic skills. No prior knowledge of linguistics or second languages is necessary. Professionals in linguistics, computational linguistics and language technologies use dozens of the world's languages to create engaging problems that represent cutting edge issues in their fields. The competition has attracted top students to study and work in those same fields. This is truly an opportunity for young people to experience a taste of natural-language processing in the 21st century. The first round is on February 4, 2009. Top performers will be invited to the second round on March 11, 2009. Students have two options for participation: - find a university site within driving distance OR - ask a teacher at their high school to administer the contest. NACLO requests that students register by January 20, 2009; however, the deadline for registration is Feb. 3, 2009. University sites may fill up. Please try to register early to ensure that you are able to compete at the university of your choice. For a list of university sites, to register as a teacher administering the olympiad, or for full details, go to http://www.naclo.cs.cmu.edu .

Title: New Book: Literature in Second Language Education
Body: From http://www.continuumbooks.com/Books/detail.aspx?ReturnURL=/Search/default.aspx&CountryID=2&ImprintID=2&BookID=131325 Literature in Second Language Education: Enhancing the Role of Texts in Learning by Piera Carroli Publisher: Continuum Summary: This book proposes the study of literary texts as a vital component of L2 linguistic and cultural knowledge. The research, conducted with students of Italian in Australia, is situated in the wider L2 context, and compared to studies on students' perceptions of English and French literary texts in countries such as Canada, Italy, Australia, Germany and the Ukraine. The first part of the book takes the debate on the inclusion of literature in language education as a springboard for posing crucial questions about how students, and educators, view literature. The theoretical framework draws from educational, linguistic, philosophical and literary theories, and focuses on the role of awareness in learning and the role of the learner's experience. The second part of the book evaluates an innovative approach to teaching and learning L2 literature, and discusses the application of this to the language classroom. Containing a balance of theoretical and practical concerns, this book will be useful reading for researchers of applied linguistics and second language acquisition. Visit the publisher’s website at http://www.continuumbooks.com/Books/detail.aspx?ReturnURL=/Search/default.aspx&CountryID=2&ImprintID=2&BookID=131325 .
