Title: New Book: English for Occupational Purposes
Body: From http://www.continuumbooks.com/Books/detail.aspx?ReturnURL=/Search/default.aspx&CountryID=2&ImprintID=2&BookID=130886 Title: English for Occupational Purposes: One Language? Author: Dan Kim Publisher: Continuum Summary: English for Occupational Purposes examines the field of teaching English in occupational settings as a particular instance of general workplace training and development. It is the first book to unite scholarship on workplace English with general training. The book uses case studies and surveys from various occupational contexts to ask whether English for Occupational Purposes and general training use the same "language" in articulating their curricular and instructional development. The main focus of the study is on business organizations, specifically in South Korea, where English has become an integral part of business both in the workplace, in business to business negotiations, and in professional training. This monograph will be of interest to researchers in English for specific purposes and applied linguistics as well as scholars of workplace education. Title: New Book: Language, Identity and Study Abroad
Body: From http://www.equinoxpub.com Language, Identity and Study Abroad: Sociocultural Perspectives Jane Jackson Publisher: Equinox Summary: A growing number of foreign language students are taking part in study and residence abroad programs but what actually happens when they cross cultures in an unfamiliar land? What effect can a sojourn have on their sense of self and their perceptions of the target language and culture? What factors affect their willingness to use the target language in social settings? This book is based on the premise that student sojourners and educators can benefit from a deeper understanding of the language, identity, and cultural factors that impact on the development of intercultural communicative competence and intercultural personhood. Linking contemporary sociocultural/ identity theories with practice, the relationship between language and cultural learning and identity reconstruction are examined through an ethnographic exploration of the actual experiences of study abroad participants. The book provides a unique, interdisciplinary perspective, addressing issues of importance to professionals in second language acquisition, sociolinguistics, cross-cultural psychology, speech communication, and intercultural communication. Title: Report: Dual Language Learners in the Early Years: Getting Ready to Succeed in School
Body: NCELA is pleased to announce the release of their latest report entitled Dual Language Learners in the Early Years: Getting Ready to Succeed in School This report reviews the literature on getting dual language learners ready for school. Dual language learners are children from 3-6 years old who are learning a second language while still acquiring their first. The report adopts the framework of the National Schools Readiness Indicators Initiative (NSRII), and looks at ways in which ready families, communities, services and schools can work together to get children ready to succeed in the early years of education. The report reviews demographic data on the conditions of early childhood, highlights research on instruction for young English language learners with a special focus on communicative skills and literacy, and reviews research on best practices in assessment for this population. The report can be downloaded from http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/resabout/ecell/earlyyears.pdf .
