Title: New Book: Morphosyntactic Issues in Second Language Acquisition
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847690654 Morphosyntactic Issues in Second Language Acquisition by Danuta Gabrys-Barker Publisher: Multilingual Matters Summary: The volume consists of articles on issues relating to the morphosyntactic development of foreign language learners from different L1 backgrounds, in many cases involving languages which are typologically distant from English, such has Polish, Greek and Turkish. It highlights areas which may be expected to be especially transfer-prone at both the interlingual and intralingual levels. The articles in the first part report empirical studies on word morphology and sentence patterns and also look at the interface of lexis and grammar in the discourse and syntactic processing of foreign language learners. The second part elaborates on pedagogical issues concerning the acquisition of difficult grammatical features such as the English article system or the 's' ending in the third person singular. It also comments more generally on the way pedagogic grammar functions in the learning of the L2. Visit the publisher’s website at http://www.multilingual-matters.com/display.asp?isb=9781847690654 .

Title: New Book: Corpora in Language Acquisition Research
Body: From http://www.benjamins.com/cgi-bin/t_bookview.cgi?bookid=TiLAR%206 Corpora in Language Acquisition Research: History, methods, perspectives Edited by Heike Behrens Publisher: John Benjamins Summary: Corpus research forms the backbone of research on children's language development. Leading researchers in the field present a survey on the history of data collection, different types of data, and the treatment of methodological problems. Morphologically and syntactically parsed corpora allow for the concise explorations of formal phenomena, the quick retrieval of errors, and reliability checks. New probabilistic and connectionist computations investigate how children integrate the multiple sources of information available in the input, and new statistical methods compute rates of acquisition as well as error rates dependent on sample size. Sample analyses show how multi-modal corpora are used to investigate the interaction of discourse and linguistic structure, how cross-linguistic generalizations for acquisition can be formulated and tested, and how individual variation can be explored. Finally, ways in which corpus research interacts with computational linguistics and experimental research are presented. Title: Call for Presentations: Drama Pedagogy in Foreign Language Instruction
Body: CFP: Inhabiting Worlds - Drama Pedagogy in Foreign Language Instruction 40th Anniversary Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA) February 26 - March 1, 2009 Hyatt Regency - Boston, Massachusetts Drama pedagogy uses techniques from theater practice to experience foreign languages cognitively, socially, kinesthetically, and empathically. Students engage with different worlds, move around in them and make their own impact on them. In drama pedagogy, the ordinary classroom becomes the platform for students to develop their own voices, invent and shape their own personae, take clear stances, and adopt their own attitudes in and towards given situations, always in interaction with others. Drama pedagogy techniques are used for building interactive exchanges that leave behind the stilted dialogues and role plays of textbooks; for experiencing literature in ways that go beyond the mere reading and subsequent discussion of texts; and for raising grammar awareness by realizing grammatical structures in concrete use instead of in decontextualized exercises. This panel seeks to investigate innovative scholarship and/or teaching at the intersection of drama/theater and language teaching and learning. Proposals of no more than 250 words should be sent electronically by 15 September 2008 to Susanne Even, Germanic Studies, Indiana University, evens@indiana.edu . Deadline: September 15, 2008 Please include with your abstract: Name and Affiliation Email address Postal address Telephone number A/V requirements (if any; $10 handling fee) The complete Call for Papers for the 2009 Convention will be posted in June: www.nemla.org . Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA panel; however panelists can only present one paper. Convention participants may present a paper at a panel or seminar and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable.

Title: 2nd Annual Testing Seminar
Body: From http://larcnet.sdsu.edu/workshops.php?page=2ATS 2nd Annual Testing Seminar August 11 - August 14, 2008 San Diego State University, San Diego, California Last summer, LARC, in conjunction with the national Centers for Latin American Studies, launched the first of four annual workshops on language assessment. The first week long workshop, held in the third week of August, addressed the principles of assessment. Participants included instructors and program directors representing ten languages: Mayan, Quetchua, Zapotec, Mixtec, Haitian Creole, Spanish, English as a Second Language, Pashtu, Persian, and Korean. The discussions distilled the universal principles of language assessment and the importance of recognizing the cultural context when testing. Special focus was placed on aligning the test with the curriculum. In small groups, participants created test sections and items with an eye to achieving construct validity. This summer (2008) the second phase of the testing workshop will take place, with a special emphasis on measuring proficiency in oral skills. LARC is asking participants to bring sample student recordings in their languages of instruction. Building on the principles of testing, they will now apply these to oral skills assessment, using the full range or resources available at the LARC language labs, including CAST, LARC’s VOCI's and LARCStar. Application Deadline: August 1, 2008 For more information, go to http://larcnet.sdsu.edu/workshops.php?page=2ATS .
