By Angela Hokanson May 1, 2008 Students who finished a new, 10-week Korean conversation class at Mark Keppel Elementary on Thursday left the enrichment session with some practical knowledge of a new language and a hearty appetite for Korean food. The school, which began a Korean Dual Language Program with a group of kindergartners this fall, started a distinct, weekly Korean language class in late February to introduce students who aren’t in the dual-language program to Korean. Parents had asked for a way to offer their children some exposure to the language, so educators responded by creating the conversation class, which was open to Keppel students in every grade level, said Naehi Wong, who coordinates the dual language program. Title: Linguistic Atlas Projects: English Accents in the United States
Body: A May 3 article in the Athens Banner-Herald talks about a recent grant to the Linguistic Atlas Projects, which map English accents in the United States. The $349,600 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize older recordings of people's speech, as well as phonetic transcripts of interviews dating from the 1930s, before tape recorders were widely available. The digitized recordings will eventually be available to the public on the Internet. This project could be useful for English teachers who want to expose their students to a wide range of American accents. The article about the projects and grant is available at http://www.onlineathens.com/stories/050308/uganews_2008050300785.shtml . The Linguistic Atlas Projects website is available at http://us.english.uga.edu .
