Title: TESOL Virtual Seminar: The Evolving Architecture of CBI
Body: From http://www.tesol.org/s_tesol/sec_document.asp?CID=1426&DID=10781 The Evolving Architecture of CBI Marguerite Ann Snow and Donna Brinton Wednesday, May 21, 2008 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. EDT (2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. GMT) Content-based instruction (CBI) is the integration of selected content with language teaching aims. Applicable to both ESL and EFL instructional settings, CBI is a flexible approach that is constantly evolving. This seminar provides descriptions of current models of CBI, discusses the similarities and differences between CBI and ESP, and presents several case studies of CBI implemented in both ESL and EFL classes. In this seminar, participants consider * how the models may be implemented with adolescent through adult learners * which proficiency levels are most appropriate for CBI * which issues and challenges exist to effective implementation * what outcomes can be expected in terms of student learning and motivation # May 16 is the pre-registration deadline. If you register by May 16, you will receive access to both the live event on May 21 and the playback version. The playback version is available for a three-month period after the live event. The combination of aural and visual cues naturally makes video input more comprehensible. However, there are several uses of video that extend beyond listening comprehension activities. For example, video can be effectively used to teach grammar and in promoting output (both oral and written). This workshop will consider multiple uses of video as well as techniques for adapting authentic materials to learners of various proficiency levels. Knowing and speaking many languages may protect the brain against the effects of aging. Dr. Gitit Kavé, a clinical neuro-psychologist from the Herczeg Institute on Aging at Tel Aviv University, together with her colleagues Nitza Eyal, Aviva Shorek, and Jiska Cohen-Manfield, discovered recently that senior citizens who speak more languages test for better cognitive functioning. Under the program, English translations of contemporary best-selling Japanese novels are made available free of charge to any interested groups.
