2nd Annual Testing Seminar
August 11 - August 14, 2008

San Diego State University, San Diego, California

Last summer, LARC, in conjunction with the national Centers for Latin American Studies, launched the first of four annual workshops on language assessment. The first week long workshop, held in the third week of August, addressed the principles of assessment. Participants included instructors and program directors representing ten languages: Mayan, Quetchua, Zapotec, Mixtec, Haitian Creole, Spanish, English as a Second Language, Pashtu, Persian, and Korean.

The discussions distilled the universal principles of language assessment and the importance of recognizing the cultural context when testing. Special focus was placed on aligning the test with the curriculum. In small groups, participants created test sections and items with an eye to achieving construct validity.

This summer (2008) the second phase of the testing workshop will take place, with a special emphasis on measuring proficiency in oral skills. LARC is asking participants to bring sample student recordings in their languages of instruction. Building on the principles of testing, they will now apply these to oral skills assessment, using the full range or resources available at the LARC language labs, including CAST, LARC’s VOCI's and LARCStar.

Application Deadline: August 1, 2008
