Title: New Report: The Funding Gap
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2008/02/new_report_the.html The seventh in a series of annual reports, The Funding Gap includes state-by-state analyses of funding trends from 1999 to 2005, comparing the resources available to school districts serving the highest percentages of low-income students and students of color to the resources available to districts serving the lowest percentages of such students. For the first time, the report also compares funding available to school districts serving high percentages of English language learners (ELL) to that available to districts serving the lowest percentages of ELLs. Using data for the eight states with the highest percentages of English learners, the report finds that high-ELL districts generally receive less financial support than do districts with few or no ELL students. Read more about and download the report at http://www2.edtrust.org/EdTrust/Press+Room/fundinggap07.htm .

Title: Internet for Learning Languages: Interactive Tutorial
Body: From http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/tutorial?sid=1655211&op=preview&manifestid=224&itemid=12021 This tutorial on using the Internet for learning languages is one of a national series of tutorials written by qualified tutors, lecturers and librarians from across the UK. The tutorial is an interactive step-by-step guide that shows students how to make the most effective use of the Internet in the context of learning languages. It aims to be relevant to a wide range of students studying languages at all levels (French, German, Spanish, Italian, English as a Foreign Language, as well as less widely taught and used languages). Learners are taken on a ‘site-seeing' Tour - an overview of the types of websites that can help with the study of languages. The Discover section then provides advice on finding further resources, and gives tips on planning effective search strategies. The Judge section teaches techniques for evaluating websites. Finally, in Success, the tutorial presents specific examples of how the Internet can meet the needs of individual learners. Quizzes are included in the Tour and Judge sections. Users can add sites that interest them to the Links Basket, which functions on the ‘shopping basket' principle. More information about tutorial is available at http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/tutorial?sid=1655211&op=preview&manifestid=224&itemid=12848 . Access the tutorial at http://www.vts.intute.ac.uk/tutorial?sid=1655211&op=preview&manifestid=224&itemid=12021 .

Title: National Online Early Language Learning Assessment (NOELLA)
Body: The National Online Early Language Learning Assessment (NOELLA) tests children’s learning in Mandarin Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. Developed by the Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS), NOELLA is designed to measure the language proficiency of students in grades three through six. With engaging and interactive questions, NOELLA is a Web-based assessment that your students will enjoy. It measures reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Janet Glass, ACTFL National Language Teacher of the year, recently highlighted the importance of language testing in the most recent issue of The Language Educator: “NOELLA and the STAMP are laudable pilot efforts at making assessment consistent with standards, accessible by computers, and national.... Greater language competency cannot help but be enhanced by finally having solid assessments that measure it.” Share in the pilot efforts. Beginning April 2008, CASLS will offer language teachers one last opportunity to try NOELLA free of charge! Register your classes today at http://noella.uoregon.edu . By participating in the pilot, you will help shape the final version of NOELLA. CASLS will consider your feedback before finalizing test items to develop a reliable foreign language assessment tool. Feel free to forward this to your colleagues. Sincerely, Na Zhou NOELLA Pilot Coordinator Center for Applied Second Language Studies (CASLS) University of Oregon
