Workshop on Corpus Methods for SLA Research
25-Jan-2008
University of Southampton, United Kingdom

This workshop will present a new corpus of spoken L2 Spanish (Spanish Language learner Oral Corpus: SPLLOC), and review the potential contribution of learner corpora to SLA research. The corpus has been created through an ESRC funded project at the universities of Southampton, Newcastle and York. It consists of samples of learner speech in a variety of genres, from beginners to advanced. The conventions and software of the CHILDES project (http://childes.psy.cmu.edu ) have been used for transcription and part of speech tagging of the corpus. The program includes presentations from members of the SPLLOC team about the corpus design and associated research program and a hands-on workshop demonstrating CHILDES programs for data analysis.

Travel bursaries: A limited number of travel bursaries will be available for full time research students. To be considered for a bursary please send a short statement with your registration request explaining how participation in the workshop will benefit your doctoral research. Deadline for bursary applications: 30 November 2007.
