Title: Lesson Plan: Parts of Speech and Poetry
Body: From http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=1058 Overview Grammar can serve as a jumping off point for exploring language. This lesson, which is appropriate for middle school and some high school students, extends students’ knowledge of parts of speech and encourages them to look critically at how language functions. Students review the parts of speech. They then read the poem “Jabberwocky” by Lewis Carroll, identifying parts of speech and interpreting what the nonsensical words mean. After experimenting with an online magnetic poetry kit, they create their own kits, which they use to both revise and reinterpret Carroll’s poem and write their own original poems. View the entire lesson plan, which includes printable worksheets, a guide for assessment, and elaboration of national English standards, at http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=1058 .

Title: Ideas for a Health and Fitness Unit
Body: Here are some ideas for a health and fitness unit from FLTEACH users: We do a skit which the students turn into a video. Its similar to Extreme Makeover (or a program like it) where the students need to include a work out section (to practice commands, excuses), a makeover section (to practice body parts) and 2 commercials (health related products). The students are asked to use imperative, preterit and present tense. Schriever, J. Re: Health and Fitness unit ideas. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 19 Apr 2007). --- I used to put commands (formal or informal depending on previous studies) with health and fitness vocabulary. We then did "ads" for how to be a healthy person. Your "ads" could be oral (a TV or radio commercial) or written (magazine ad is 8X11, billboards are poster boards, or TV ad could be a power point. They had to use X many vocabulary words and X number of both positive (Drink water every day) and negative (don't eat high fat foods) commands. I graded it on grammar, appropriate graphics and minimum requirements of vocabulary. Barrios, M. Re: Health and Fitness unit ideas. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 19 Apr 2007). --- Among other things, I have mine partner up and write and memorize an exercise routine (after which everyone has to complain that one body part or another hurts, or encourage each other to further effort, or exclaim that they feel pumped, tired, etc.) Then we spread the routines out over quite a while...basically, whenever the group looks droopy and lacks pep, or look in some way as if they need a "brain break" I call on another group to do their routine!! It works great to re-energize everyone and stay in the language AND practice vocab. Blaz, D. Re: Health and Fitness unit ideas. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 19 Apr 2007).

Title: Call for Papers: Observing Talk: Conversation Analytic Studies of Second Language Interaction
Body: From http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-1555.html As language teachers, much of our work involves conversation and talk-in-interaction, even if we rarely stop to think about what it is we are doing with and through our talk. Although the participant-centered approach to talk in Conversation Analysis (CA) has been widely used in sociology for the last forty years, it has only been in recent years that it has received a growing interest among researchers into second language learning. The JALT Pragmatics SIG is currently seeking papers for inclusion in the second book in its Pragmatic Resource Series. This collection will explore ways in which CA can be applied to investigations of interaction in second language contexts. Authors must adhere to the CA precepts of * privileging the participants’ actions over analyst interpretations and/or pre-existing models * basing findings on detailed analysis of recordings of naturally-occurring interaction * beginning with “unmotivated looking” rather than testing a hypothesis * building collections of related interactional phenomena, based on the organizational principles of sequence, preference, turn-taking, repair, turn construction and action formation. Papers will be considered in two main areas: 1. CA studies based on collections of phenomena from second language interaction. 2. Commentary on how CA principles can be incorporated into classroom practices. Initial proposal and abstract due: 30 June 2007 More information about submission guidelines available at http://linguistlist.org/issues/18/18-1555.html .
