Title: European Association for Computer Assisted Language Learning 2007 Conference
Body: From http://www.eurocall-languages.org EUROCALL 2007 Mastering Multimedia: Teaching Languages Through Technology Venue: University of Ulster - Coleraine Campus Date: 5 - 8 September 2007 As the use of multimedia technologies has become an increasingly integral part of language learning, the challenge is to ensure that educators have a sufficient knowledge of the technology and underlying pedagogical issues to use it to maximum effect in the classroom. Furthermore, in the research-driven world of academia, it is important that research in the area of multimedia technologies is not seen as secondary and less serious than other forms of research in language learning but rather as a area of considerable importance and merit. Consequently, the major challenge we face is to continue to build upon the distinguished profile of multimedia-based research in the area of language learning. Title: UN proclaims 2008 as Year of Languages
Body: From http://www.eurolang.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2879&Itemid=1&lang=en UN proclaims 2008 as Year of Languages Bruxelles - Brussel, Friday, 18 May 2007 by Davyth Hicks The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed 2008 the International Year of Languages. It will aim to promote unity through linguistic diversity. The Assembly called upon States and the Secretariat to work towards the conservation and defense of the world's languages and requested the Secretariat to appoint a coordinator for multilingualism. Representatives from several States made contributions. The Andorran representative said, "Protecting languages is one of the fundamental pillars of cultural diversity". Meanwhile, there was refreshing news for our Breton, Basque, Occitan and Corsican readers when the representative from France said, “The right to use your own language, the capacity to communicate and, therefore, to understand and be understood, the preservation of an inheritance that dates back centuries or even millennia, should be of prime importance to the United Nations”. The idea of devoting a whole year to languages was proposed by Austria two years ago at the 33rd UNESCO General Conference held in Paris. Title: News Article: Stabilizing Indigenous Languages
Body: From http://www.indiancountrynews.com/fullstory.cfm?ID=449 Stabilizing Indigenous Language Symposium - Discovering what to do, and how to save our languages by Christine Graef Words from a long time ago are coming back, carried on a river flowing around government efforts to extinguish language, past state policy uninclusive of funding, soothing anxiety amid elders who remember and rippling toward the next generations who more and more are echoing the sounds once nearly silenced across the lands. “Before, we saw linguists, one right after another, talking to us about our language,” said Gerald Hill, Oneida, Bear Clan, former chief counsel for the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. “Now, it’s evolved into us being the activists. Before, people talked about it and didn’t know what to do. Now, talk is about how to do it, what the resources are, what works and what doesn’t. We have technology. We’ve found how to avoid politics. Now, it’s more of a discovery of what can be done and how it can be done.” Hill was one of many speakers from around the world who came together to share at the recent Buffalo School State College 13th Annual Stabilizing Indigenous Language Symposium, hosted by the School of Education and co-sponsored by the Seneca Nation of Indians.
