Title: News Article: Heritage Language Classes in Universities
Body: From http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/07/nyregion/07heritage.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5070&en=58c823ef192ae980&ex=1179547200 Students Search for the Words to Go With Their Cultural Pride By FERNANDA SANTOS Published: May 7, 2007 CLOSTER, N.J. — Last summer, watching Al Jazeera’s reports of the war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, Fidele Harfouche was startled to realize that in addition to understanding the Arabic spoken by the anchors, she could, for the first time, read some of the words marching across the bottom of the screen. During her sophomore year at Drew University, a small liberal arts college not far from here, Ms. Harfouche signed up for a class in classic Arabic in a quest to become fully literate in her mother tongue. It’s a move that many immigrants who came to the United States as children and those who were born here to immigrant parents have been making, said language experts, who refer to such students as “heritage speakers.” “As more and larger immigration groups are represented in the United States, what we’re seeing is sort of a renewed sense of ethnic pride taking hold among the younger generations,” said Kathleen E. Dillon, associate director of the National Heritage Language Resource Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. The U.C.L.A. center, with financing from the United States Education Department, is conducting the first national count of college programs geared toward heritage students, most of whom grew up speaking a language other than English at home. Title: Khalil Gibran Academy: Arabic-Themed School in New York Object of Public Attention
Body: --- International Herald Tribune: NEW YORK: This city has dozens of small public schools that focus on themes, such as sports careers, the arts, and social justice. Few generate any controversy. Then, someone decided to start an Arabic-themed school. "Jihadi," "public madrassa," and "segregationist" are just a few of the labels tossed at the plan. Conservative Web sites have seethed against the idea, as have some members of the public. Even concerns about finding space for the school have been coupled with questions about security. Read the entire article at http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/04/15/america/NA-GEN-US-Arabic-School.php?page=1 . --- The New York Times: The Department of Education has found a temporary site for the Khalil Gibran International Academy, a public school devoted to the study of Arabic language and culture that is scheduled to open in September. The school will be put in a building at 345 Dean Street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, that currently houses the Brooklyn High School of the Arts and the Math and Science Exploratory School, a middle school. Last Friday, the department canceled plans to place Khalil Gibran in the same building as Public School 282, an elementary school in Park Slope. The department had faced opposition from the parents at P.S. 282, who objected to sharing the space. And some conservative columnists had condemned the school, saying it could promote radical Islam. Read the entire article at http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/nyregion/10school.html?_r=1&oref=slogin . --- Suite 101: New York City is breaking up large, ineffective school districts into smaller and more successful academies. Because of funding provided by Bill and Melinda Gates, schools are experimenting with * High School of Violin and Dance * The Peace and Diversity Academy * Academy for Careers in Sports * The Food and Finance High school * Academy for Hospitality and Tourism * Academy for Visual Arts and Theater Specialty academies have created much interest in education and many other states are doing the same. Debbie Almontaser, who has a son serving in the National Guard, thinks the time is right for an Arab academy. Almontaser is a New York City educator of Muslim and Yemeni background and will be the director of the school. She has worked to fight prejudice and stereotyping of Arabs and Muslims after Sept. 11. Title: Lesson Plan: Persepolis and Webquest on Iran
Body: From http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=1063 Overview of lesson plan: Persepolis is a novel about a young Iranian girl during the Islamic revolution. In order for students to fully understand the implications of plot events, they need to be familiar with the culture, society, history, and politics of Iran around the time of the Iranian revolution. The WebQuest included in this lesson gives students a chance to research one aspect of Iranian culture or history, and student-created PowerPoint presentations allow all students to gain knowledge of several different aspects. Because a teacher has designed the WebQuest, it is focused on essential information that will be relevant to the students’ reading, and students can trust that the information on the Web sites is reliable. In addition to a description of the lesson, worksheets are included for download and printing. The lesson is available at http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=1063 .

Title: News Article: Latin Alive in Maine Schools, but Future is of Concern
Body: From http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2007/04/30/latin_alive_in_maine_schools_but_future_is_of_concern Latin alive in Maine schools, but future is of concern April 30, 2007 PORTLAND, Maine --Latin may be called a dead language, but it's alive and well in Maine classrooms. Latin courses that were eliminated in schools during the 1970s and 1980s have been revived, leading to a "mini-resurgence" in Maine over the past decade, said Benjamin Johnson, president-elect of the Maine Classical Association, a professional organization for educators. At some schools, students are lining up for the chance to study the language. One concern now, however, is that Maine may not have enough new Latin teachers to replace the current ones when they retire. The state lists 60 Latin teachers in Maine, but few college students nowadays major in the classics, and those that do tend to stay in academia rather than teach at the high school level, Johnson said.
