Title: New Report: Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Program
Body: From http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/newsline/archives/2007/03/what_works_clea_5.html The What Works Clearinghouse has released a new intervention report on the Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (BCIRC) program. The program, an adaptation of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) program, is designed to help Spanish-speaking students succeed in reading Spanish and then making a successful transition to English reading. In the adaptation, students complete tasks that focus on reading, writing, and language activities in Spanish and English, while working in small cooperative learning groups. The BCIRC program was found to have potentially positive effects on reading achievement and English language development for students in grades 2-5. Read the intervention report at http://www.whatworks.ed.gov/InterventionReportLinks.asp?iid=21&tid=10&pg=IntRating.asp .

Title: New Resource: Evaluator's Toolkit for Dual Language Programs
Body: From http://www.cal.org/twi/evaltoolkit Evaluator's Toolkit for Dual Language Programs by Kathryn Lindholm-Leary, Ph.D., and Gary Hargett, Ph.D. The purpose of this Toolkit is to assist staff in dual language programs that serve English language learners (ELLs) to understand how to meet assessment and accountability guidelines. This Toolkit assumes no prior knowledge of data collection, data management or data analysis on the part of the user. It is truly "A Beginner's Toolkit." If you want to know how to establish an evaluation question, what data to collect, how to develop a spreadsheet, how to analyze your data, and how to present them, this is the Toolkit for you. There are LOTS of examples in each section, including step-by-step instruction in how to do the basic data analyses most programs would need. Use the menu at left to click on each section in order to go through the Toolkit. It is best to go through the Toolkit sequentially, as each section builds on the previous section. The Toolkit is available at http://www.cal.org/twi/evaltoolkit .

Title: Ideas for Activities with Short Stories
Body: An FLTEACH user gives the following ideas for activities to do after reading a simple version of a children’s story: 1. Photocopy story. Cut into strips. Hand out to students. Have them line up in the order of the story. (Reading, sequencing). 2. Same as above, but have students illustrate their section. Then using the illustration (but not the handout/strip) present their illustration (explain using simple sentence - Este es Pinocchio. Es un chico....Este es Jiminey Cricket. Es el amigo de Pinocchio.). 3. Have them read the story and circle adjectives. 4. Teach them to say LIAR or That's a lie in Spanish, Danger, Don't do it.... As you read the story, have them call out each time Pinocchio tells a lie or does something dangerous/scary/wrong... 5. Write out the story with blanks. Give a word bank. Have them fill in the blanks with the appropriate word as you read the story. (Variation on a CLOZE). 6. Back to the strips (sections of the story). Hand out a section. Have student act it out. Other students identify which section. (Variation of charades.) Dempsey, R. Re: Fwd: books. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 23 May 2007).
