Title: News Article: Salem Students Learning English at Better Rate
Body: From http://www.statesmanjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061104/ITK/611040327/1016 Salem students learning English at better rate: Law targets those who speak another language first TRACY LOEW Statesman Journal November 4, 2006 Seven of 10 English-language learners in the Salem-Keizer School District made progress toward full English proficiency last year, and 11 percent reached proficiency, according to a state report released Friday. That's better than last year, when 56 percent progressed at least one level and the same percentage reached full proficiency. Local children's advocates said any progress is good, but the district still has a lot of work to do. "We're playing catch-up to the historical neglect in terms of hiring the diverse teachers and staff that should be working closely with these kids," said Eduardo Angulo, the chairman of the Salem/Keizer Coalition for Equality. "The professional development (for teachers) has made a difference, but we know that a major effort needs to be implemented," he said. Title: New Book: Multilingualism in European Bilingual Contexts
Body: From http://www.multilingual-matters.com/multi/display.asp?isb=1853599298 Multilingualism in European Bilingual Contexts: Language Use and Attitudes Edited by David Lasagabaster and Angel Huguet Despite the spread of multilingualism, the number of research studies in multilingual contexts is scarce. This book deals with this question by examining would-be teachers' language use and attitudes, as their influence on future generations can be enormous. The use of the same questionnaire and the same methodology allows the reader to compare the results obtained in different European bilingual contexts, where the presence of diverse foreign languages leads to a situation in which several languages are in contact. Aimed at a diverse readership: of interest to pre- and in-service teachers, researchers, students and those working in sociology, psychology, second language acquisition and education. For more information, go to http://www.multilingual-matters.com/multi/display.asp?isb=1853599298 .
