Title: Songs to Review the Preterite
Body: FLTEACH A query to the FLTEACH listserv requesting songs that reinforce the use of the preterite received the following suggestions: --- I have used AYER by Gloria Estefan, but it is a difficult song to sing aloud. Nathan, M. Pret. songs. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 13 Sept. 2005) --- El ultimo beso por Marc Anthony is great! Moore, M. Re: Pret. songs. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 13 Sept. 2005) --- I always liked "El corrido del caballo blanco", sung by various artists. It contains the preterite as well as a good Mexican geography lesson. Conley, P. Re: Pret. songs. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 13 Sept. 2005) --- Three songs I would recommend are: 1. "Cuando te vi" by Charlie Bravo. I in fact use this song to introduce the preterite of -er and -ir verbs in Spanish II. 2. "Amor del bueno" by Reyli. This beautiful song has been nominated for a Latin Grammy for "Song of the Year.” 3. "El cine" by Mecano. This song can be used to review the preterite tense or vocabulary for "el cine.” You're right "Ayer" by Gloria Estefan is also a fantastic song to review preterite tense. I make up two different cloze exercsies (A and B), have pairs of students listen to the song, fill-in the blanks, and have the pairs help each other with the right answers. Watson, G. Re: Pret. songs. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 13 Sept. 2005) --- Maná - Pobre Juan Maná - En el muelle de san blas (it's good for imperfect vs. preterite) Maná - Angel Shakira - Día de enero (first verse) Shakira - Ojos así Juanes - la historia de Juan Ford, A. Re: Pret. songs. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 13 Sept. 2005)

Title: News Article: School Focuses on ELLs and Special Education Students
Body: From http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2006/11/04/news/coastal/oceanside/20_23_4811_3_06.txt King focuses extra attention on special ed and English-learners By: KEITH RUSHING - North County Times OCEANSIDE ---- Smaller classes for second-language learners and more tutoring for low-income students are just two of the changes that Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School is making this year to meet the federal government's educational requirements. Under No Child Left Behind, schools must have roughly a quarter of all students and students in various demographic groups performing at grade level or above in math and English. King missed that mark in 2006 with its special education students and those learning English. For Principal Bob Rowe, who's in his first year at King, the task is to put a framework and program together to help teachers and students make greater academic strides. Changes have already been made that Rowe thinks will help the school satisfy federal requirements this spring when students take standardized math and English tests. For one, English learners who need help are in smaller classes this school year that average between 20 and 25 students. Previously, classes had between 35 and 40 students. In the next couple of months, the school will offer students more instruction in math and English on Tuesdays and Thursdays either before school or after school, depending on students' needs. Title: 3 New Reports for the Education of ELLs: Academic Interventions, Adolescent Newcomers, and Accommodations
Body: Center on Instruction From http://www.centeroninstruction.org/resources.cfm?category=ell&subcategory=research&grade_start=0&grade_end=12 The Center on Instruction has published a series of three books which contain practical guidelines for different aspects of teaching ELLs. The first book, entitled, Research-Based Recommendations for Instruction and Academic Interventions [K-12] provides evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, administrators, and teachers in K-12 settings who seek to make decisions about instruction and academic interventions for ELLs. The domains of focus include reading and mathematics, and the recommendations apply to both a class-wide instructional format and individualized, targeted interventions, depending on the population and the goals of the instruction. The second set of guidelines, Research-Based Recommendations for Serving Adolescent Newcomers [6-12], was written primarily for the group of ELLs who are adolescent newcomers to the United States and who have a relatively short period of time in which to simultaneously develop academic language skills and master grade-level content. The third set of guidelines, Research-Based Recommendations for the Use of Accommodations in Large-Scale Assessments [K-12], focuses particularly on research-based recommendations on the use of accommodations to increase the valid participation of ELLs in large-scale of language and content assessments under NCLB. All three sets of guidelines can be downloaded at http://www.centeroninstruction.org/resources.cfm?category=ell&subcategory=research&grade_start=0&grade_end=12 .
