New Books: Perspectives on Community College ESL Series

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), October 2006

Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has recently published its Perspectives on Community College ESL Series, which is comprised of two volumes. Volume 1 is Pedagogy, Programs, Curricula, and Assessment, which was edited by Marilynn Spaventa, and Volume 2 is entitled Students, Mission, and Advocacy, which was edited by Amy Blumenthal.

The authors of the 13 cases presented in Volume 1, Pedagogy, Programs, Curricula, and Assessment, demonstrate a variety of pedagogical approaches, program organization, curricula development, and assessment practices in Community College ESL programs. The authors focus on programs that address their students' diverse needs, whether they are related to incorporating technology or allowing for the flexibility that adult students often necessitate.

Volume 2, Students, Mission, and Advocacy, considers the experiences and needs of immigrants, refugees, and international students who attend community colleges. The authors examine who community college ESL students are, how they fit into a college's overall mission, and the roles that their educators and advocates play.
