In 2005, AATG, the California Language Teachers Association (CLTA) and Goethe-Institut San Francisco launched the initiative "Step into German." Its goal was to bring the excitement of the Soccer World Cup to schools in California while at the same time promoting the study of German among Middle and High School students. In the new year, "Step into German" will go nationwide with the second phase of the project: Music from Germany. We would like to invite all German teachers to preview our website. Title: Teaching Family and Community
Body: An FLTEACH subscriber posted the following question: I am currently student teaching in a ninth grade French 1 class at a high school. We have been doing a unit on "community" and what makes up the students' communities. We talked about school and the next topic is the family. Does anyone have any suggestions for creative or interesting ways to introduce the topic of family? Also, does anyone have any suggestions for follow-up activities with this topic? Agnew, L. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv (FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU, 7 Nov. 2006). --- Replies included the following: In my Spanish classes to introduce the topic of family, I show the students pictures of families - we post them on the board (or I create an overhead of a family portrait) and I describe the words [She (pointing to grandma) is the mother of my mother]. Then I repeat, my "grandmother" is the mother of my mother. Then "Who is she? (pointing to grandma). Students respond "grandmother". I do this for all the family members. When I get to second year, we introduce in-laws, etc. for first year we stick to mom, dad, bro, sis, aunt, uncle...etc. Toward the end of the unit we do a family tree and label it with the various titles. Later on, I have the students make a photo album of their family members. They have to do at least one page per family member. The have to describe their parents, tell where they work, tell what they like to do, what they don't like to eat, their favorite things. etc. I use the photo album as a culminating activity for the year so I have the students include elements of almost everything they have learned in year one. I stay away from real family trees due to the variety of situations that are out there.. I also use a cartoon family that the kids are familiar with to introduce vocab.. Walters, S. Adger Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University, December 2005 The two-way immersion (TWI) toolkit originally published by the Northeast and Islands Regional Educational Laboratory at Brown University is now available online on the Center for Applied Linguistics Web site. Two-way immersion is a form of dual language instruction that brings together students from two native language groups for language, literacy, and academic content instruction through two languages. The Toolkit is designed as a resource for teachers, parents, and administrators involved with TWI programs, particularly those at the elementary level, and primarily focuses on classroom instruction and parental involvement. The classroom instruction segment includes a Question & Answer (Q&A) document on teaching in TWI programs; model lesson plans that show how best practices are implemented in the TWI classroom; a study guide to facilitate the use of the Q&A document and model lessons for professional development; and additional resources on effective instructional practices in TWI programs. The parental involvement segment is designed to be used by teachers, administrators, and parents. This segment includes an overview of two-way immersion, a Q&A document that addresses questions and concerns that parents frequently have, a home-school communication template designed to help classroom teachers facilitate strong home-school connections, and additional resources that include suggested readings on parent involvement in two-way immersion programs and links to resources that parents may find useful. Collaboration between classroom teachers and ELL experts has corresponded with rising test scores for nonnative speakers. By Stacy A. Teicher | Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor December 21, 2006 Making up 40 percent of the public school district, St. Paul's ELLs are doing particularly well compared with other parts of Minnesota and many urban districts in the United States. That has prompted educators from as far away as Alaska and England to come see what's at work here. District officials tout their team-teaching model as one reason they've significantly narrowed the gaps between English language learners (ELLs) and their native English-speaking peers. Such collaborations between classroom teachers and ELL experts have corresponded with a steady rise in test scores for students who collectively speak more than 100 native languages. Nationwide, 5.4 million K-12 students speak limited English, and they urgently need help. Only 4 percent of eighth-grade ELLs scored at or above "proficient" in reading, compared with 32 percent of non-ELLs, according to the 2005 National Assessment of Educational Progress. Meanwhile, classrooms are diversifying with the speed of a spinning globe: 25 states saw the number of ELLs more than double from 1993 to 2003.
