Title: Usefulness of English Limited
Body: Speakers of English may consider themselves fortunate to know one of the most widely-studied and -spoken languages, but as the number of non-native speakers rises and jobs for English speakers move overseas, monolingual English speakers may need to learn other languages if they wish to distinguish themselves. Title: New Book: Dialogic Approaches to TESOL
Body: From https://www.erlbaum.com/shop/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=0-8058-5597-1 SubTitle: Where the Ginkgo Tree Grows Author/Editor: Shelley Wong This book locates dialogic pedagogy within the history of TESOL approaches and methods in which the communicative approach has been the dominant paradigm. Dialogic inquiry in the form of story telling, oral histories, and knowledge from the ground up and from the margins has much to offer the field. In dialogic approaches, the teacher and students learn in community and the students' home languages and cultures, their families and communities, are seen as resources. Dialogic Approaches to TESOL: Where the Ginkgo Tree Grows explores teacher research, feminist contributions to voice, social identity and dialogic pedagogy, and the role of teachers, students, families, and communities as advocates and change agents. After a brief history of TESOL methods and an introduction to dialogic pedagogy, four features of dialogic approaches to TESOL are identified and discussed: learning in community, problem-posing, learning by doing, and who does knowledge serve? The main text in each chapter considers a single topic related to the concept of dialogic pedagogy. Branching text leads to related discussions without losing the main point of the chapter. This structure allows readers to become well-rooted in each component of dialogic pedagogy and to "branch out" into deeper philosophic understandings as well as actual practices across a range of contexts. Title: New Book: Reading Hebrew
Body: From https://www.erlbaum.com/shop/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=0-8058-5076-7 SubTitle: The Language and the Psychology of Reading It Author/Editor: Joseph Shimron Over the last two decades, the study of languages and writing systems and their relationship to literacy acquisition has begun to spread beyond studies based mostly on English language learners. As the worldwide demand for literacy continues to grow, researchers from different countries with different language backgrounds have begun examining the connection between their language and writing system and literacy acquisition. This volume is part of this new, emerging field of research. In addition to reviewing psychological research on reading (the author's specialty), the reader is introduced to the Hebrew language: its structure, its history, its writing system, and the issues involved in being fluently literate in Hebrew. Read more about the book at https://www.erlbaum.com/shop/tek9.asp?pg=products&specific=0-8058-5076-7 .

Title: Suggestions for Reading/Paraphrasing Practice
Body: There are at least three problems when we work with reading at upper levels: 1. The readings in the textbooks are dull. 2. They are too difficult. 3. If assigned as outside reading, they come after math, English, history... Try looking at the simpler readings on http://www.deutschlern.net for topics that support or replace the readings in your text. The readings can be put into printable form using the ARBEITSBLATT DRUCKEN button, although you still may have to reformat them a little. I find the readings here much more interesting and reasonable. Look also at the Maerchen at http://www.hueber.de . If you assign reading as homework, give a fast 3-5 question quiz at the beginning of class to test comprehension. Make the questions easy, so that they can get 100% if they made an honest attempt at the reading. Schwab, H. Re: [AATG-L] Paraphrasing activities? American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (28 Feb. 2006). ---- One thing that I have done with my AP students is that they are required to check out Das Tagesbild at http://www.zeit.de . It's authentic, it's short, and with an accompanying picture, students are usually able to figure out what's being said, without knowing all the words. Lyden, J. Re: [AATG-L] Paraphrasing activities? Title: French Country & Western Music
Body: A recent request on the FLTEACH listserv for French-language country music recommendations received the following suggestions. ---- Go to http://www.archamabault.ca and do searches on artists like Tex Lecor, Willie Lamothe, (la famille) Daraîche, Patrick Norman, Georges Hamel, Michèle Richard, and don't forget Zachary Richard from Louisiana. Several of these musicians have their own Web sites. You can download 30 second clips or whole songs. The lyrics can usually be found at http://www.paroles.net. Curry, A. Re: French music for country/western fans? Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (23 Feb. 2006). ---- There are a whole lot of country artists in Quebec and often there are country music festivals. A well-known one advertises each year at Quebec's Winter Carnaval is the "Festival Western de Ste-Tite". You might find the names of some current artists there. The festival site is http://www.festivalwestern.com . A current artist: Gildor Roy (truck drivin' music). I really like Gildor. He acts, he sings and he often emcees TV shows. http://www.passeport.qc.ca/artistes/gildor/gildor.html Les Cowboys Fringants are Quebec’s top group and their Web site contains audio and video clips. Listen for their songs: ‘Toune d'automne,’ ‘Les étoiles filantes’ and ‘Plus rien.’ Stef Carse had a French version of ‘Achy Breaky Danse.’ Steve Faulkner’s good tune is ‘Si j’avais un char.’ Beau Dommage’s ‘Le blues de la métropole’ is almost country. Graham, D. Re: French music for country/western fans? Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (23 Feb. 2006). ---- There are many groups in Québec playing some type of country music. A group I really enjoy is Éloï et Jonathan Painchaud - they're a couple of brothers with a nice blend of country, rock, and folk music from Québec that will please your country fans without alienating your non-country fans. Also check out Céline Dion's CD "1 fille et 4 types" - it's an album reaching back to her roots. I know country & Céline don't sound like they would mix but it really is a terrific album.
