Title: 'La Marseillaise' Audio and Lyrics
Body: Here are some ideas recently posted to the FLTEACH listserv for finding soundfiles (with and without vocals), lyrics (French and English), and other information about "La Marseillaise." La Marseillaise - audio files http://old.marseillaise.org/francais/audio.html http://marseillaise.org/english/audio.html ---- I like to show the part in the film "Casablanca" where the customers at Rick's cafe sing the Marseillaise, drowning out the German soldiers. If you show a little bit before the actual singing, the students can sense the emotion in the singing of the anthem. (They also want to rent the movie to see more of it!) Porto, K. Title: Tales for French Class
Body: Here are some recommendations from a recent discussion on the FLTEACH listserv about good sources for fairy tales or folk tales to use in French class. ---- This Web site holds twelve books by Jean de la Fontaine, each with many short tales. The site is searchable by keyword and also provides information about the author. http://www.jdlf.com ---- A nice book with lots of French folk tales at an advanced high school level is "Contes et legends de France," edited by Andree Vary and published by the National Textbook Company. It includes "La Belle et la Bete" and "Cendrillon" as well as many unfamiliar to American teenagers. Galazin, S. Folk tales. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. Title: Easy German News Articles
Body: A recent request on the AATG listserv for a site that has easy news articles for classroom use received the following reply. ---- I recommend the Web site for the ZDF Kindersendung "Logo." It's news for kids and very readable. http://www.tivi.de/fernsehen/logo/rubrik/00127/index.html Also Deutsche Welle "Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten." A painfully slowly-spoken version of the regular Radio programs that can be downloaded and played in class (you can print out the actual text as well). They also have news articles with glosses. http://www.dw-world.de/dw/0,2142,2146,00.html Grollman, S. Re: [AATG-L] easy German news articles. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. Title: Spanish Subjunctive Activities
Body: I use various activities to practice the present subjunctive in my class: * a scenario where three students are roommates and they decide which household chores each person volunteers to do or refuses to do. * planning a trip: in groups of 3-4, students decide where they want to go, how they want to travel, who else will come along... * Simon Says * Agree/Disagree: faced with a series of statements (e.g., the Cubs will win the World Series), students have to agree or disagree using expressions of doubt, denial, etc. Bricault, D. Re: Spanish subjunctive activities. Foreign Language Teaching Forum listserv. FLTEACH@LISTSERV.BUFFALO.EDU (7 Nov. 2005). ---- I have used the song by Juan Luis Guerra, "Ojala que llueva cafe." I give the students the words with the subjunctive verbs taken out and they have to put the verbs in the subjunctive. Then we listen to the song and sing along or dance around the room and it also brings up a lot of good conversation about culture and why someone would write a song about it raining coffee. Here is a link where you can find the song (if you click on "Sobre la pagina" and then on "spanish grammar exercises" you will find many more ideas using songs and poetry) http://www.colby.edu/~bknelson/exercises/ojala/index.html Buxton, S.
