Title: Recommended Films in German for Younger Learners
Body: I have had success with the following movies: The Sound of Music - The only movie I show in English Nosferatu - The 1979 Werner Herzog version Wir Können Auch Anders (No More Mr. Nice Guy) From Inter Nationes with English subtitles and very funny: http://www.goethe.de/kug/kue/ flm/bes/deindex.htm Schneewittchen - from Icestorm: http://www.icestorm-video.com Rumpelstilzchen - Icestorm Das Singende Klingende Bäumchen - Also from Icestorm and so corny it's good Das Wunder von Bern - A must show film! Emil und die Detektive - 1954 version from Inter Nationes with English subtitles Die Brücke - a classic WWII anti-war movie, many of the actors that played the boys are famous today in Germany Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel - A cute story without English but with DfH subtitles. I show it in the second semester and they understand a lot of it. Amadeus - One of the American Film Institute's top 100. Dubbed in German with English subtitles. Two thumbs up. Harry Potter - Dubbed in German with English subtitles. OK, so these last two contain no authentic German culture but they sure help my enrollments when I show them at registration time. Title: Call for Papers: TALGS 2006
Body: From http://core.ecu.edu/engl/talgs/conference/conference.htm The purpose of this small, student-run conference is to provide a relaxed but serious environment where graduate students in Applied Linguistics and professionals working in the field of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) can have the experience of presenting their work and receiving feedback. The TALGS Conference provides graduate students and TESOL professionals (including ESOL, TESL, EFL, ESL, TEFL, etc.) a forum to showcase their research and experiences. TALGS is committed to bettering the educational experiences of language learners in the community by providing a comfortable environment where an interaction between theory (the researchers) and practice (the teachers) is possible. Call for Papers: TALGS is not a theme-based conference. We encourage submissions from a variety of fields that can make a contribution to an understanding of language teaching or language learning. This year, we're especially interested in cross-disciplinary proposal submissions. For instance, proposals with relevance to language learning from the fields of sociolinguistics, sociology, education, foreign languages, and psychology will be considered. Proposals grounded in action research, works in progress, and pilot research are also welcome. Presentations requiring computer facilities can be accommodated. Multiple proposals will be considered. Proposals must be submitted electronically and must be received no later than January 18th, 2006.
