Title: New Listserv for Italian Teachers
Body: The LCTL project at the U of Minnesota has established a new listserv for teachers of Italian. We hope this will increase the ways that Italian teachers around North America and throughout the world can share resources and communicate with each other. Our other teachers' lists have discussions, for example, about how to say things in the target language (newer technology is always interesting), funding opportunities, job announcements, conferences, sharable material, new publications. The discussions are determined by the subscribers. To subscribe to italian-t do the following: 1) send an email to listserv@lists.umn.edu 2) in the body (not the subject line) type in subscribe italian-t You can also go to our listserv page on the CARLA website: http://www.carla.umn.edu/lctl/resources/listservs.html and click on italian-t. You will be asked to verify that you indeed intend to subscribe, then you'll get confirmation and information about how to post messages. By all means tell any colleagues who have an interest in Italian language teaching and learning about the new list and how to subscribe. The list is available to the general public, un-moderated (to start with), and only subscribers can post messages. Let me know if you have questions or problems subscribing. Title: New Article on Literacy in Second and Foreign Language Instruction
Body: From http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1540-4781.2005.00312.x Beyond Orality: Investigating Literacy and the Literary in Second and Foreign Language Instruction Richard Kern & Jean Marie Schultz The Modern Language Journal, Volume 89 Issue 3 Page 381 - Autumn 2005 This article argues for a context-sensitive, integrative approach to research on reading, writing, and related text-based practices in second language acquisition (SLA). The approach views literacy not as universal psycholinguistic processes but as constellations of social, cognitive, and linguistic practices that vary with situational and cultural contexts and that are learned through apprenticeship. Many of the phenomena that have been explored in SLA research under the rubric of the cognitive (e.g., learning strategies, reading strategies, writing strategies, transfer, etc.) need to be explored simultaneously from the perspective of the social (i.e., their functional significance within particular contexts of language use). Within the context of socially and culturally embedded literacy, the role of the literary, the traditional material for the teaching of reading and writing in many university-level foreign language classrooms, takes on new importance in terms of its potential impact on the development of second language literacy. Methodologically, this agenda places key importance on qualitative approaches, and highlights the need for a great deal more research on semiotics in written communication practices.

Title: New Article on Bilingualism and Heritage Language Learners
Body: From http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1540-4781.2005.00314.x Bilingualism, Heritage Language Learners, and SLA Research: Opportunities Lost or Seized? Guadalupe Valdés The Modern Language Journal Volume 89 Issue 3 Page 410 - Autumn 2005 In this article I invite a reconceptualization and expansion of the field of second language acquisition (SLA) by examining possible intersections between SLA and the area of language instruction currently referred to as the teaching of heritage languages. I discuss the ways in which the opportunity of broadening SLA-and-instruction research can be seized by current researchers so that it can address the most intractable educational problems involving language. Drawing from current research on bilingualism, I first describe the challenges of providing language instruction for heritage speakers and examine the bilingualism of these unique language learners. I then offer an overview of the questions raised by the study of heritage language learners. Finally, I describe communities of professional practice and existing disciplinary boundaries and conclude with a discussion of the ways in which the field of SLA can draw from other areas in order to affect the educational futures of language minority children around the world and, at the same time, contribute to our greater understanding of the human language faculty.
