Title: Statistics Show Importance of Native-Language Education
Body: The Pew Hispanic Center recently released a study confirming that students who immigrate to the U.S. with poor educational backgrounds are much more likely to drop out of U.S. schools, and that the earlier they start school here, the less likely they are to quit later on. The data incudes students from Asia, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean as well as several countries in Latin America. Title: Gift Ideas for Parting Teachers
Body: A recent discussion on the AATG listserv of crafts that students can make for teachers who are leaving generated the following suggestions. These might be appropriate ideas for teachers taking maternity leave or for substitute or student teachers nearing the end of their assignments. ---- My daughter did some "assisting" at a local elementary school while working as an au pair near Stuttgart. When she came home, the class presented her with a scrapbook that has become a treasured memento of her time with the kids. Each student was responsible for a page; along with a photograph of the student, each included a letter/note/drawing/poem referencing a memory he/she had of a time/lesson/activity/etc. with my daughter. She looks back at it often and will never forget the kids. Branstad, P. Re: [AATG-L] Student thank yous to departing student teacher. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (2 Nov. 2005). ---- When I left my very first teaching position to go work in France, my French II students made me a scrapbook of things related to our class. On one page, for instance, they pasted chewing gum wrappers (the colored part) and wrote "Throw out your gum" in French (which I used to always tell the kids)... things like that. I have that little scrapbook to this day and treasure it. It brings back fond memories. Haring, C. Re: [AATG-L] Student thank yous to departing student teacher. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (2 Nov. 2005). ---- One year while I was out during maternity leave, my sub had students create the ABC's in German. My son is now four years old and really enjoys the book. Crow, M.A. Re: [AATG-L] Student thank yous to departing student teacher. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (2 Nov. 2005). ---- The year I taught in Austria, one class made me cookbook of authentic Austrian dishes. I still use those recipes today with my own students. Pennington, G. Re: [AATG-L] Student thank yous to departing student teacher. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (5 Nov. 2005).

Title: The World's Most- and Least-Endangered Languages
Body: Linguists estimate that at least one endangered language dies each month, a rate increased as roads are built into isolated areas and mass media in major languages continues to spread. While many are dying, just a few languages are establishing themselves as the most widely-spoken. Title: Activity for Practicing the Future
Body: I send the kids to the following site: http://www.snpp.com/guides/chalkboard.openings.html It is a list of the chalkboard openings from the show "The Simpsons." Many of them start off with "I will not...". I've done a ton on proper dictionary techniques and I just taught the future. I use this as a cute little activity to combine those two skills. I put them in duos and they get to choose any four and translate them. They put them on the board and we all try to guess what they mean. Culturally irrelevant but funny. Pento, A. Re: Future. Title: Vocabulary Game for Kinesthetic Learners
Body: My kids enjoy this game to review vocabulary. I put them in groups of three. Two kids put their heads down. The third kid in each group sees the secret word I hold up. When I say go, the other two kids raise up their heads and the third kid begins to sculpt the word using playdough (no words allowed). The first kid to guess the word gets the point, then the sculptor rotates out with one of the guessers . It's just a variation of Pictionary, but my kids love using playdough. I found very cheap packs of ten at a party supply store. Obviously concrete nouns are easiest to sculpt (boat, tree, camera, etc..) but with some creativity you can sculpt anything - abstract nouns (rhythm, joy, honor), verbs (to iron, to read) etc. It really works for pretty much any vocabulary. Best of all, the entire class can be sculpting the same word or you can have the sculptor in each group choose a word from your vocabulary list so that every group is doing a different one at once.
