TitleOPI-Style Conversation Starter
Body
This timely activity idea was recently posted to the FLTEACH listserv by a French teacher. It could easily be modified for any language and might spawn other ideas for conversation starters.

----

I am preparing a unit in a conversation class. Students have studied telephone vocabulary and some Internet vocabulary, responded to about 30 brief situations, read texts about phone use, and now I want to give them an OPI style situation. Here is an example:

"Your French friend's aunt was evacuated from New Orleans to Dallas, but you do not know the name of the shelter. There is a web site where you might get a lead by checking the names posted under each of the city's shelters. Once the aunt has been located, invite your friend to use the phone card you purchased for him. He must begin by dialing the 800 number listed on the card, he must then dial the password, followed by the digit one and the phone number of the shelter, beginning with the area code. He should then inform the shelter worker who he is and state with whom he wishes to speak and how he located that person. Explain it all in good French, as though your friend were with you."
