Title: Ideas for Teaching the Subjunctive in German
Body: A recent request on the AATG listserv for ideas on teaching the subjunctive in German received the following suggestions: ---- I had the kids work in groups and imagine that they were stranded on a desert island. They had to come up with statements about what they would like to do/see/eat, what they could not do/see/etc, etc. (You can go wild with suggestions...) I then created a large palm tree (had the art teacher help!) out of paper on one wall and we hung paper coconuts all over the tree that had sentences on them. For the more advanced kids, you could have them add a reason. Charlton, C. Re: [AATG-L] need suggestions for unit on subjunctive. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (19 Aug. 2005). ---- I have found that a generic prompt works well for this exercise, such as: Wenn ich ____________________ waere, wuerde ich .... I then give them a couple of humorous examples like: Wenn ich Donald Trump waere, wuerde ich meinen Friseur feuern. Ich wuerde.... or Wenn ich reich waere, wuerde ich mir einen neuen Porsche kaufen. Der Porsche waere.... The prompt is more personalized for each student and generates enthusiasm. It also means you don't have to rack your brain trying to come up with an appropriate prompt. Anderson, D. Re: [AATG-L] need suggestions for unit on subjunctive. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (19 Aug. 2005). ---- A cautionary tale: While working on the subjunctive with my first-ever 3rd-year group, I had them write a series of sentences on "Was wuerdest du machen, wenn du unsichtbar sein koenntest?" or something along those lines. This is not a question for a roomful of 17-year-old boys, at least if you want papers that you can show during parent conferences! Kalnin, P. Re: [AATG-L] need suggestions for unit on subjunctive. American Association of Teachers of German listserv. AATG@listserv.iupui.edu (19 Aug. 2005).

Title: Teaching Paris
Body: A recent query on the FLTEACH listserv for sources for teaching materials for a unit on Paris received the following reply: ---- The RATP has lots of online information where you can find details which could be used to create an activity. http://www.ratp.info/informer/ticket_t.php For instance, note that the same ticket can be used on either the bus or the métro, so you can buy your tickets without having to plan how many of each you will need. You can also have students examine costs. Is it better to buy a "carnet de 10" at 10,50 Euros or get a card for a number of days? http://www.ratp.info/informer/tarif.php For those traveling with individuals with special needs, the RATP site includes information on lines that are "équipés pour l'accessibilité". http://www.ratp.fr For a fascinating variety of Paris maps: http://www.lexilogos.com/paris_carte.htm Ponterio, B.
